BF Mommas Question

Have you started exercising to lose pg weight? If so, did it affect your supply? I have heard it does. I have lost all but 10lbs of baby weight but unfortunately I still had like 40lbs to lose when I got pg so I really need to get back in the saddle, but I want to bf as long as possible and my supply is good now so I don't want to mess it up.

Re: BF Mommas Question

  • It hasn't effected my supply at all. I have been exercising 5-7x per week since 6 weeks PP. I have enough of a supply to have a small freezer stash as well as consistently have 10-12oz in the fridge for outings or DH to help with a feeding here or there.

  • I started running again about a month ago and it hasn't influenced BFing.  However, I am very careful about staying hydrated and eating enough calories.  I eat to satisfy my hunger and enjoy several snacks a day.  I've been losing about 1 lb every other week.  I'm intentionally losing weight very slowly because I think anything faster will effect my supply.  When I tried more intensely to lose some weight after Drew it did affect BFing, so I want to avoid that this time.

I still have about 10 lbs I'd like to lose and I truly believe that I could lose it in a month if I really cut back on my portion sizes and my snacking.  But BFing is too important to me.  I'll have years to lose weight but only a limited time to BF my baby girl (at least that's what I try to tell myself when I look in the mirror and <sigh> at my jiggly stomach!)

  • I've been running 6 times a week since Wyatt was 6 weeks and I haven't noticed a drop in my supply. I've lost a good deal of wait and still have about 35lbs total to lose. But didn't notice any difference in my supply.

  • I'm nervous about this too - it's nice to hear that you can still exercise & BF with little to no effect! I have enough troubles with keeping my supply up though so I'm holding off on the really intense stuff until this whole BFing stuff is done.
  • I've been running daily since 6 weeks pp and haven't experienced any change in my supply. I'm actually running in a 10k this weekend :) I also drink a ton of water and never say no to dessert.
  • So long as you stay well hydrated and don't skimp on the calories you should be fine. Also, take it easy and loose it slow, I wouldn't be surprised if a crash diet and crazy workout routine would have a negative effect on supply, but so long as it's gradual and you allow your body to get used to it, you should be fine.
