Inducing if cervix is favorable?

My OB is letting me go to 41 weeks and said if my cervix is favorable then she can induce me with pitocin if I get that far. I thought inducing was a bad idea all around with a previous c-section. Has any one been given this option? What are you thoughts about it? TIA!

Re: Inducing if cervix is favorable?

  • My water broke at home and my contractions never really picked up so my MW started me on a very low dose of pitocin to get them going.  She would gradually bump up the dosage every hour until eventually my body just "got it" and they turned the pit. off all together.  I had a successful VBAC.

  • My OB said she would feel comfortable augmenting me with a small dose of pitocin, i.e. giving me a small dose of pitocin if I was aready in labor having contractions. She said she would not induce me.

The studies seem to suggest that induction is associated with a statistically significant higher rate of UR. If my OB offered that as an option to me, I would discuss with her the studies and her experiences that lead her to believe it is indeed a safe option.

  • I was fully induced with pit at 41 weeks for my VBAC and had a successful VBAC- no problems.  They give you lower doses and watch you more carefully but it is done pretty often and it is safe.  It's cervadil they can't give you.

  • I'm not actually pregnant just yet but I asked my OB about it just a few days ago.  She said that if my cervix were completely closed and not thinning at all then she wouldn't attempt any methods.  However, if I were dilated at all and/or thinned then she would allow a small dose of pitocin.

  • My office will straight up induce is your cervix is favorable and the baby is engaged by breaking your water and using the foley bulb.  They won't use any cervical ripeners or pitocin.  Supposedly they will augment with a small amount of pit if needed though, but I haven't clarified at what point in labor they will actually do this.

  • My office is like em's.

They will not use pitocin to induce at all.  But they will use water breaking or a foley bulb if they can.

I didn't ask about using pit if you are already in labor, but I'm thinking they don't use it at all.

  • My OB told me I was favorable for an induction but he absolutely would not give me any pitocin and neither would anyone else at the hospital where I was delivering. I would have been ok with a small dosage
