pregnancy vent re: clothing

I'm in that annoying stage where all my maternity clothes are still way too big, but my waistline has expanded to the point there none of my pants fit comfortably. I have a few of those belly band things, but right now, they just aren't comfortable and I feel like they are always shifting around. Going from sitting to standing or vice versa while wearing one requires all kinds of adjustments to make sure everything is in the right place. I've worn yoga pants just about every day this week, but I really need to wear something else because sooner or later someone might catch on to the fact that I don't actually do yoga ;-)

oh and my chest is too big, so all my cute, flowy knit sundresses make me look like a hooker.

boo.

  • I totally know how you feel except that I'm on the opposite end of the spectrum. During my entire maternity leave, I wore yoga pants and maternity T-shirts. When I'd go out in public looking like a slob, I would make sure to put on tennis shoes so it looked like I had just been to the gym. Now that I'm back at work, I can barely button my pants and they are super tight in the rear. When I wear button down shirts, I'm afraid a button is going to pop off and hit someone in the eye because they are so tight around my boobs.

So, I guess all I can say is that you are in good company. The good news for you is that soon you will be showing and you'll be able to wear all of the super comfy, stretchy maternity clothes.

  • I had some non-maternity plain black stretchy pants that were my go to during the first trimester.  I think I bought the original pair at K-mart when it was the only thing open and I was stranded at the airport nearby, but I've since bought several pairs and they were great early on.  Otherwise, maternity pants with the demi panel (i.e., just a wide stretchy waist band instead of the up to your boobs thing) and a long shirt worked.  Although my chest got bigger, it just got to what most people would think was a normal size but empire waist dresses worked.

  • Boo. That is when I just sucked it up and bought regular pants in the next size up (which I now wear as "normal" pants. Whoops!). I'm assuming you've done the pony tail holder through the button hole trick?

This was my favorite trick.  My favorite in between clothes were the jersey knit skirts that were comfy and stretchy but still looked cute.  I wore them with cute t-shirts that showed my little bump proudly to convey that I was, in fact, pregnant, and not just gaining weight.

  • Last year (I was due in January)   I just wore skirts all summer, they were so much more forgiving than pants.
  • I always hated that stage.  Especially when you aren't telling people so it just seems like you're a slob.  How about investing in a of couple empire style dresses that you can wear now and then later this fall with leggings?  Panel pants seemed to work well for me at that stage as did skirts.
  • I work in a relatively casual environment. I wasn't ready for stretchy pants so i just bought a pair of jeans that would fit w/ a little room from target. they were like the same price as the belly band. I got about 6 weeks out of them and they'll be there for me when i'm on the way back to my old size

  • I feel you pain.  I finally look pregnant and like I should be wearing maternity clothes.  The crap part is my maternity bathing suit is still a little big and just hangs.  Plus it has no boob-age support (I didn't really need it before DS1 came)  now I need to wear a bra under it.  I can still squeeze into my regular tankini, but not for too much longer.

  • I wore my regular jeans up through about the 6 month.  My loose jeans, not the tight, fitted, going out jeans. lol!  I used the ponytail holder with trick and also wore those bands.  I found they helped keep my jeans from shifting around, since they were essentially unbuttoned (and kept that covered up).

Also, when i couldn't wear my running shoes, I wore my Doc Martens.  I still have many pairs spanning many years, but don't wear them much now.  Around Christmas, I had to basically unlace them completely.  But i have some nicer pair, and were "dressier" (yeah, i know) than running shoes.

I bought a bunch of the tshirts at Old Navy.  Esp long sleeve for cooler weather.  You can get them pretty big and they are pretty cheap.

  • Thanks, everyone for commiserating :-) I knew I'd find some kindred spirits here!

And you know what's funny about the hairband on the button of the pants trick? I had kind of forgotten about it...but then when I went to go do it on the chinos I was wearing, I realized that with the exception of my jeans, pretty much all my pants, shorts and capris have that flat, slidey hook closure, not a button!
