Newborns and Swings

The other day I was pricing some swings and bouncers.  I was wondering does anybody know if swings and bouncers are safe to put newborns in? My mother was telling me she didn't think it was a good idea that I put the baby in either one that early, but I'm 30 years old and alot has changed since she had my brother and I. (Trying to get her to realize that)  I understand they need the support for the neck and back, but I really would like to put her in something.  I know I can end up holding her all the time if I don't buy one at all and I will be at home alone while my fiance is at work.  Any thoughts on this?

Re: Newborns and Swings

  • You can put them in swings/bouncers from day one. Things you need to wait on are jumperoos, exersaucers, bumbos.

  • Today's swings and bouncers have plenty of support for newborns.  They can be very calming for your LO.  Each one has various settings to change as your child gets older.

  • we used both from day one.  the swing/bouncer we got had a 5 point harness system...so it went between the legs, around the waist and over both shoulder.  that's important because it keeps them from slumping over.  plus, they should come with a head support to keep their heads centered.

  • Ditto the PP'ers. Especially the Papasan swings, which are really designed for use with smaller babies. We had our kids in the swing from Day 1, it was a lifesaver!
  • Yes - for us the swing was a lifesaver in the beginning with G.

  • I used the swing and bouncer right from the start. I like the swings with the option to swing side to side. We used the swing for naps for months without messing up her sleeping habits. Take my advice and get a swing with a plug!

  • Swinging is a natural motion for newborn babies. Very soothing. I suggest ordering the Happiest Baby on the Block DVD asap. Dr. Karp swears by swinging, swaddling, sushing and sucking - preferably all at once! We are HBOB devotees!

  • Thank you gals so much, I think I will do a little shopping this weekend and buy my baby the swing I desire her to have.  I feel at ease now. Smile
  • My first baby was premature (33 weeks...3 lb 15 oz), and when she came home from the NICU at 3 weeks old, we started putting her in the swing.  When they weigh so little, you should put a blanket under them and let the blanket hang down and sway in the breeze...that helps slow the swing down.  But she loved it from day one.
