How many nursing nightgowns did you buy?

I'm trying not to go overboard, but I'm also not sure what to prepare for with a newborn. I bought two nursing nightgowns and two nursing tanks and two nursing bras. My birth coach said not to buy too much stuff because you'll get bigger once your milk comes in, but I have to have something because DH is not capable of going to the store to get this stuff if I'm home with a 2 day old baby! (lol) I also don't have easy access to laundry (coin laundry down the road or MIL's house).

Re: How many nursing nightgowns did you buy?

  • I have 4 nursing bras, two nightgowns, and a robe. The nightgowns aren't actually "nursing" night gowns but they neckline is such that it's easy to pull down. We aren't having any guests staying in our house, so I figure I'll probably just be walking around in just a bra and robe a lot of the time. It also depends on how often you plan on washing them - I figure I'll go a few days in each if they stay relatively clean. I'm going to start with the two, and if I need more I can always just order from amazon and have it sent to me.

  • I made it through nursing DD1 for a little over a year without buying a single "nursing nightgown". They are really unnecessary. I wore pj pants with tank tops to bed with a nursing bra underneath, in the winter I wore a long sleeve shirt with my pj pants with buttons at the neckline (like a henley) or just pulled my shirt up to nurse with a nursing bra underneath. I bought 1 cheap nursing bra before DD was born and once my milk came in I bought 3 good ones (Bravado) which lasted me the year and are still in good shape for DD2. You really don't need nursing clothing besides the bras. Breastfeeding shouldn't cost you an arm and a leg.

  • for sleep (not around the house....just in the bedroom) I went to goodwill and bought a few over-sized t-shirts and cut slits in the nipple area.

  • The only nursing clothes I had were bras and tanks.

You can sleep in a comfy nursing bra (or eventually nothing) and pull up/down whatever clothes you have on.

Any item in life that is "one purpose" doesn't get purchased, I need multitasking ; )

  • I am a FTM, so far this is the only "night" time purchase I have made.  I have packed it in my hospital bag, not sure if I'll wear it at the hospital or not...

  • Nursing nightgowns??? I've never owned one. A top is good enough for me, day and night. And I actually did not buy nursing bras until my supply settled. The boobs were beyond huge when milk first came in.

  • I have two nursing bras.  I don't buy any gowns or tanks, just wearing my usual t-shirt and sweats to bed.
  • I just soaked through them for a month so I gave up and used T-shirts. I couldn't keep up with the laundry. A nice pile of Hane's white t-shirts did the trick.

  • For just starting that sounds good.  You might add a couple of nursing camis.

  • I don't think i'm buying anything except maybe a nursing tank or bra.  I want to wait and make sure BF'ing is for me before i spend all this money on clothing.

And for me personally i don't like nightgowns at all, but i do have a button down PJ shirt.

  • I wore nursing tanks and regular tanks to bed.  T-shirts didn't work for me because I had to wear nursing pads and they had nothing to stick to (I hate wearing a bra to bed).  The pads fit perfectly in a nursing tank or a regular fitted tank (camisole type).
  • hmmm, i dont really even know what a nursing night gown is. I slept in nursing tank tops or nursing bras with a regular tank top.

I survived off a two nursing tank and a couple of nursing bras with out underwires to sleep in.

I didn't fluctuate at all in size actually. I did get BIG at first when my milk came in but once my supply evened out, i went back to normal size.  A nursing tank is pretty forgiving.

  • Zippo. I didn't buy any last pregnancy. I might buy one gown this time around just for fun. Mostly I slept in my underwear and bra those first few weeks. After giving birth, you sweat... A LOT! Naked (or nearly so) is the way to be! Plus, it's easier to get to the girls!

This! It's so easy to get away without needing to take out a loan or sell your soul! I bought cheap nursing bras from Target and then bought a couple more inexpensive, but well-built, bras after my milk came in. The extras - nursing gowns, nursing tops, $400 pumps and gadgets galore, are just extras. Feeding my DD the first year, including the bras, probably cost me around 60 dollars, give or take.

I'm frugal by nature, anyway. It thrills me to get a screamin' deal. :)

  • I still EBF and I have 4 nursing bras, like 6 tanks, and many V cut shirts. Honestly you dont need more then that. Plus for the first month you'll want to be topless all the time. Your Lo will be stuck to you. Make sure you get a tube of lanolin too.

EDIT: The tanks also work really well when youre out and about too. Its nice not to have to strip to nurse. I wear mine with a cardigan.

Nipple pads are also a must when youre super leaky at first.

  • I'm another one  planning on doing the nursing tank and pj pants for bed. I can also throw on a button pj shirt when it gets colder and leave it unbuttoned with the tank underneath. Like many others here, I don't  plan on spending big bucks on nursing specific items. I currently have a tank and a bra, and will buy more once I see what sizes I will need. We live very close to a target that carries this stuff, so I'm not concerned about having everything up front.
  • I never wore one and I nursed my DD for 15 months.  Heck, the only thing nursing related I ever bought was a couple of bras and then nursing tanks.

Nursing tanks were my favorite.  I wore them under my clothes in the winter and to bed with pj pants.   The ones from Bravado are the best.
