DD just turned two and we are expecting in January, so we are starting to think about how we should move her to a different bed. She is showing no signs of wanting out of her crib and the baby probably won't need the crib until he/she is 5 or 6 months old, however we want to get the rooms ready and figured it would be easier on DD to transition before the baby comes.
We are trying to decide between a youth bed (which is in between the sizes of a toddler and twin) or a twin bed. My mom has a antique youth bed that was used by my sisters and she would love for us to use it. I like the idea, b/c it's smaller than a twin and has the bed rails built in. However, we'd have to find a mattress to fit it (I think Ikea sells them) and we'd probably have to make the bedding to fit. On the other hand, I'd like to move straight to a twin. It would cost more up front and take up more room, but we wouldn't have to make the transition in a year or two, plus we could use it when Grandma stays over. What do you all think would be best?
Re: Questions about switching to a "big girl bed"...
We are moving DD into a full size bed, (the back of her crib is the headboard)...first thing we did was take the front rail off the crib...that's her bed(I'm cheap and not spending $$ on a "toddler" bed)...she likes her independence and bed time has gotten much easier. Hopefully we will be getting her mattress Sunday, if not tomorrow...she did two weeks in her "crib" bed and then we will go into the full.
She at her 2ndbday had no interest in leaving her crib...literally 2wks later crib became SUCH a hassle...my mom suggested taking the front rail off and life got easier...
We have also made a HUGE deal about getting her bed ready...got her a duvet set, sheets, pillows, and some organizers for her toys...we are going to put the whole room together when she's at nanna's for a sleepover so it's a surprise for her...
Personally, I would wait, but I'm biased. DS will be 3 in November and we're not going to transition him until at least then. He has not tried to climb out, still likes his crib (we call it bed), and isn't too big for it. We have a fitted and flat sheet, a full sized pillow and a blanket - so it is like a bed, but with a front on it.
If you think your new DC won't need the crib for almost a year from now, then, eh, you have time to transition her.
Good luck!
