Pregnant after IF

anyone take a cruise while pg?

We've never been on a cruise, but now that I'm feeling good and before we are on lockdown, DH and I were hoping to take a b-day/anni/twin-moon celebratory vaca/cruise.  I know they are pretty restrictive on when you can go, but we'd be back by 22 wks and we've gotten my OB's blessing.

Any experience?  Issues?  Where did you go?

Re: anyone take a cruise while pg?

  • I think a cruise is a great idea! I haven't been while pg, but I've been on ones to Jamaica, St. Thomas, San Juan, Grand Cayman, Cozumel and the Bahamas.

I would recommend doing some investigation on cruisecritic.com and checking out feedback there. Once you pick a cruise with destinations that sounds interesting, check out their excursions to see what you might be up for. Pretty much every stop includes options such as a beach to go relax, shopping in the near by tourist traps, or general sightseeing. And of course, you can just stay on the ship if you want to!

The one excursion I strongly recommend that I'm 99% sure you will enjoy at 22 wks (unless you get motion sick easily) is swimming with the stingrays in Grand Cayman. The motion sick part is the boat that takes you out to the sandbar where the sting rays are. It is completely awesome - I've done it twice now!

  • My BFF went on a cruise while 23 or 24 weeks pregnant and had a great time.  She said it was nice to have lots of good food, fun entertainment, and that it was also nice for her husband because if she was tired and wanted to go to bed, he could still go to the casino or bars and enjoy himself.  She went on the Norwegian Sky out of Miami for the weekend cruise to Nassau and their private island.

  • I have one scheduled for the end of October and will be 22 weeks at that point.  The cut-off for most cruiselines is 24 weeks and you just need to be signed off by your doc.  I did research on cruising while pg before booking it because the idea kind of scared me at first.  However, I don't get motion sickness in general, so I figured I would be good this time too.  Also, as stated above, you are free to do what you want to even if it is just lounging around and eating all the time.

  • We were thinking of a cruise for our vaca/babymoon, and I asked my doctor his thoughts. He said while everything should be fine as long as you go early enough, it would be preferable to be on land somewhere with a decent hospital, just in case something went wrong. Cruises do have doctors on board, but not exactly the best ones :) We ended up going to Grand Cayman and we loved it. That said, maaaany people go on cruises, so I'm sure you will be absolutely fine-we love cruising!

  • I haven't been on a cruise, but we did take other vacations. And I have to say that a cruise sounds perfect!

When we were traveling while I was pregnant I didn't anticipate my need to be near a bathroom every 30 minutes. It really put a damper on road trips, hiking or any activity that we wanted to do. With a cruise you wouldn't need to worry about that factor, go for it!

  • We went on a Hawaiian cruise through Norwegian when I was 17 weeks PG and it was awesome. I felt really good and wasnt too big or uncomfortable and I really didnt feel like being PG kept me from doing anything I wanted to do. It was the perfect low stress vaca! Only downfall was the 12-13 hours of traveling- i did everything I was told to but still ende up with massive cankles when we got home and some serious jet lag! Have fun!
