Ok - questions for the 2nd time around - re: glider and diaper bag recs

Glider -

I want a glider this time around - my great grandmother's wooden rocking chair is only so comfortable.  I am looking for this to be a chair that remains in her room long term, so I don't mind paying for quality, if it's worth it.

Fully upholstered or wooden frame with padding?

Ottoman or Recliner style?

Certain brands worth the price? (Dutailier, etc.?)

I also want a fabric that would be easy to clean - or I guess I can Scotchguard it, if recommended.

Diaper bags -

We had a JJ Cole for DS, and we loved it at first, but it has since fallen apart - the inside seams ripped out, the edges of the strap have unravelled, not to mention a package of skittles have melted in the outside pocket (obviously not the bag's fault!), so we are ready to start anew.  We liked the size of the JJ Cole (on the smaller side), but I am guessing we will need something a little bigger since we will now be carrying items for 2.

DH does a lot of diaper bag carrying, so although I would love cute, I don't mind accomodating with something "neutral" since he does carry it at least half of the time.

Anyone rec any neutral style bags?

I had a Kalencom with Natalie and I am using it this time around too. Still in great shape and big enough for all the baby stuff plus a change of clothes and snack/water bottle for Natalie. I don't see the one I have on the website anymore, but have no complaints about diaperbags.com.

  • I borrowed a glider for the second time around & didn't use it nearly as much as I thought I would. It came out as soon as he was crawling because it was a hazard, he was a climber/pull on things from the start kid. I ended up with an oversized armchair in there & loved it because I could lay across it (feet over the arm if that makes any sense) or lounge back in it comfortably to nurse.

For diaperbag I got this & love it: https://www.skiphop.com/product/21500.html
  • I still use F's glider every night.  It was a great investment.  It is a fully upholstered Dutailier.  I thought the non-fully upholstered gliders were uglyuglyugly.

DH uses the Skihop Via Messenger Bag as a diaper bag.  He has been very happy with it.  I add the PurseIn to it, then pop it out and put it in my bag when I need it.

  • I really wanted a glider for the 2nd time around too, but couldn't find one that I liked.  I am 5'4" and DH is 6'3" and we just couldn't find one we were both comfortable in.  We ended up getting a recliner instead from Ashley Furtniture that didn't have a break between the foot rest and body of the chair.  That way when you pull it out to recline it's like a bed.  It was so great for when he was colicky and I rocked him to sleep and then just put up my feet and slept there with him.  This worked for us though because it was for the living room and not his bedroom.

We have this diaper bag, only it's green.  DH is the one who carries it 99% of the time.

I do feel like the wooden frame ones scream "baby rocker", whereas the full upholstered ones are more versitle for later on.

  • I got a wooden frame glider because a chair wasn't a priority to me at all. I don't expect to keep it in her room past two years. If I did, however, I'd go for a fully upholstered.

My DH doesn't carry the diaper bag at all, how do y'all get your guys to? Anyway, I have a large Kate Spade (Stevie model, I think) that is black and doesn't look too diaper bag-ish.  I love it.

  • We bought a Best Chairs glider from Baby's 1st with A and I used it with J too...some of the best money we spent.  It's a rocker/glider thought I might have liked a recliner with a glider I could slide out if it was available.  I know it sounds redundant, but those long nights early on would have been easier if we had a recliner I could sleep in.

I carry a purse for a diaper bag so I'm no help there!

Usually one of us has the kiddo, and the other has the diaper bag,  Or sometimes if DH has kiddo, I make him carry the diaper bag, too.  Devil  Your DH lets you carry kid AND the diaper bag?  What is he carrying?  Walking behind you empty handed?  I would make him feel bad for not being gentlemanly.  ;-)  j/k.  However, we do have a neutral diaper bag for this purpose.  If I had chosen more of a purse or girly style, he would probably be more reluctant.

If he goes somewhere with a kid and I'm not with him, he has no choice. He has to take a bag with him (although he has his own black backpack baby bag). If we are all out together, no one carries it. We sling it on the stroller.

This was rec'ed to me by SIL - I hope get to go furniture shopping this weekend b/c I hear they take a long time to come in.

I was thinking a recline option would be nice, as we didn't have a chair that reclined for DS, so I felt like I couldn't really comfortably "rest" with him, if that makes sense.  It was either rickety wooden rocker or lay completely down or attempt to prop yourself up.

  • I couldn't find a fully upholstered one that I liked and was willing to spend the money on. I was really bummed about it at first. But I decided to put a rocking chair in the room that my parents used with us :) No cushion on it so far (we'll see what my needs are once LO arrives)

As for diaper bag- we found  a great one that DH likes. It's the Quicksilver Daddy Day Bag. It's a backpack with lots of pockets (some of them are lined and insulated).

I got a wooden one because I found it at a resale shop for $25!  I didn't have one for Tracey because space made me choose between that and a dresser. I'm not even pregnant yet but grabbed this when I saw it. I invested $9 in an outdoor chair cushion from target and will recover it with fabric.

The only reason we have a diaper bag is for him, I don't use it (I use my purse.)  If DH goes somewhere with F, he is taking his diaper bag.  Where does your DH put everything?  Now that F is out of diapers, he still takes it loaded up with snacks...lol

  • I don't have a glider, although I had a chair with Marion that was just a cheapie from Ikea.

I found with having two that I did 99.9% of my daytime nursing on the couch because I could watch Marion much better that way.  When I did nurse in the playroom, I'd just sit on the floor with my boppy.  And a night, I nurse her in bed.

I just used my purse for Marion but for Eliza, we actually got our first "real" diaper bag and we were so happy with it that when it got stolen, we bought the exact same thing again.

It's the Columbia Vertical Glide - picture is in red but we have it in an army green color

  • I love mny glider. and I agree with pagas, the wood ones look too country/baby to me.  ours is a nice green microfiber and is the best chair ever. it fits me, nursing baby, and Belle sits nicely on the side and we can read a book.  But so far I do alot of random sit anywhere nursing, however at some point I do see myself spending lots of time in that chair with charlie once he gets to a point of night time settling down phase.

as for a diaper bag, my best friend gave me a messenger bag when belle was born, and that is my bag.  I do use the enfamil diaper bag the hospital gave us 5 years ago as well, I just tricked it out with some fabric to make it more "me". But I've never been much of a diaper bag kind of gal. once I can get there, I go back to my big purses.  I pretty much almost ruined the lining in my HOBO slouch bag years ago because I was using that instead of my diaper bag.  but oh how I missed my good bags.
