S/O the Diva Cup

Would you recommend it to someone who has never used a tampon before? From what I know none of the women on my mom's side has ever used a tampon so seeing how all I was ever taught was "pads are good, tampons are bad" I've been scared to try them. I was reading in the post below about the diva cup and yeast infections and I wanted to give it a try. Since DS was born I've had a yeast infection off and on (sorry TMI) and if this can help I want to give it a shot. But like the tampons it kind of freaks me out. I know this all sounds funny and I know its not gonna kill me but is there any advice you can give to a first timer?

Re: S/O the Diva Cup

  • Well, it depends what your issue is with tampons. Honestly, if you're skeeved out about touching your vagina or having your hands up on your bidness, or having an object in your vagina, then yes, you probably won't like the Diva.

As for the recurrent yeast infections after baby, my doc suggested dipping a small tampon in plain, unsweetened, unflavored yogurt and inserting it for an hour or so two to three times each day when things feel 'off'. It's been very effective thusfar, if you can get past your phobia.

  • I grew up with a family of a similar mindset. [The old biddies even went so far as to say you were no longer a virgin if you used a tampon... yeahhhhno.] Anyway, I tried tampons [organic cotton w/o applicators] for the first time at age 22. I loved them and never looked back.

I haven't had my period since... May of 2010, and we're still EBF and no AF here yet, so I'm definitely looking into a menstrual cup for the future. I still have some tampons left and will use those up, but I feel like I'm just now ready for the idea of a cup, so I want to try it.

ETA: I get yeast infections when I take antibiotics, so recently I had to take it [to try and avoid a root canal] and EFFers recommended taking a probiotic supplement and that helped so much!! Everything is fine and dandy.

  • Also, I just read your latest blog entry. I'm so sorry, sweetie. Sad I don't know the background, but I hope everything turns out okay. We're here if you ever need to vent. EFFer prayers have worked miracles before!

  • I used tampons pretty much exclusively from my teen years until I found the cup.  Though you insert both, the cup is totally different.  I can't feel it and it doesn't lead to any of the same annoyances and problems.  I love my cup and highly recommend them.

  • I'm one of those rare women who actually prefers using sanitary pads to tampons.

I bought a bunch of re-usable cloth pads on Etsy and have never looked back!
