Pregnant after IF

XP: Anyone here on blood pressure meds?

My PCP just prescribed Labetalol because my BP gas been a little high the last few days. Of course now I'm nervous to take it because I know weeks 5-10 are pretty crucial. The alternative is not to take it and risk my BP going even higher along with whatever else that could bring. Does anyone have any experience with this? TIA!

  • I'm on labetalol for post partum hypertension and based on what my OB said it is regularly prescribed to pregnant and nursing mothers.  I would still double check with your OB because mine wasn't specific about which trimester(s) it is safe to take it in.

  • I'm on Labetalol and have been on it since before becoming pg.  My endocrinologist put me on it because he knew we were doing IF treatments and it's considered safe for pg. OB is fine with me being on the Labetalol.  I haven't had any problems with being on it with this pg and little one has been fine!

  • Thanks ladies! Some on my BMB suggested Aldomet so I emailed my PCP to get her opinion. Unfortunately, I won't see my Ob until 8/23 so I'm working with my PCP until then. My hospital network shares patient info between providers so both offices know exactly what I'm doing.

  • Yes, Aldomet is a very old BP drug that is very often used in pg as well.  I tried Aldomet a few years ago while doing IF treatments because of the safety of Aldomet in pg. Unfortunately the Aldomet did nothing for my BP and so I'm on Labetalol.  Good luck!

That was me! :) I only mention it because Labetolol is a category C and aldomet is B. But I think Labetolol is stronger. I'm on Aldomet but my HBP was pretty mild. Usually right around 145/85. I'm on the lowest dose and I usually am around 135/75 now, and they're happy with that since I have kidney disease. I know a ton of women have taken Labetolol and it's fine. I just figure if the category B works it might make you feel better :)

I actually got the response from my PCP about Labetalol/Aldomet.  She said that Labetalol will do a better job of controlling my BP and that she understands my worry but it's safe to be on.  She's always been very careful with my treatment/questions so I do trust her opinion.  Even after 2 Labetalol doses I feel much better, I don't have that weird, out-of-breath feeling I've had the last few days.
