Re: Follistim

  • Follistim worked great for me.  For my last IUI, I did 100 iu for I think 7 days, starting on CD4, and I got 2 good follies.  I had no side effects.  It feels just like a little pin prick when you inject it -- the needle is so small.  I was nervous about it (I'm kind of a needle phobe), but it turned out that there really was nothing to be worried about.
    TTC since November 2009

  • My experience with follistim was pretty good.  I had very few side effects, if any.  can't actually identify anything that was a real side effect except that I always felt like I was going to have hundreds of follicles before my first monitoring appointment.  I always felt a lot of activity, but I never had more than two mature (lots of little guys).

The injection itself was painless.  DH did mine the first cycle, but was away for the second and third so I just did it myself and honestly, the needle is SO thin you don't feel it and the follistim itself didn't burn.  The only thing I noticed was if I inserted the needle too slowly I would get a pretty good bruise.

    Good Luck!

  • Follistim worked great for me. I took 50 IU daily for 11 days & had 2 mature follies. The needle didn't hurt at all & I am terrible with needles. I cried the 1st day MH did the shot (because of the nerves) by the 4th day I was doing them myself with no issues.

As far as side effects, I had burning once the meds were injected. I just did it right before bed & laid down after doing them & it seemed to help.

    GL to you!

  • I actually like Follistim compared to other fertility drugs.  I didn't have an noticeable s/e except that I felt like there was a lot of activity as bfarrell said.  I had a lot of follies both times I used it and got OHSS, but I'm a completely different story.  I'm prone to OHSS.

I used the pen as well.  It was a piece of cake, honestly.  You should inject it in a dart like motion, and remember to always leave it in for 5 seconds extra after you inject all of the medicine.  Good luck!

  • As with the other posts I didn't have any noticable side effects. I used it with my first round and got pregnant with my daughter and I used it trying for #2 and was successful on the first round (just found out today). It is so easy to give yourself when you use the pen. I did 75 as my regular dose and then 150 with my trigger shot. Good luck!
  • I didn't have a problem with Follistim either.  It was easy to use and I had no s/es.  GL with IUI#3.
    TTC since 3/07. IVF#1 = canceled. IVF#2 = 0% fertilization. IVF#3 = BFN. IVF#4 = c/p.

I was on 150iu for iui2 and iui3. I found the pen to be really easy and it didn't hurt. Sometimes a sting for a minute or a small blood droplet. You will be fine!! The antipaction was the worst part. The actual needle was fine. There is also about an extra 125iu in each 900 cartridge. Since it is so expensive you want to use it all. You have to do 2 injections on the day you use the overfill. GL!

  • Follistim was the answer to our prayers after 10 clomid/iui cycles!  I did 150 iu then had a seperate hcg trigger shot.  Good stuff!
  • I agree with everybody else.  It's a piece of cake to inject.  If your Follistim is taken right out of the refrigerator when you inject it, it may burn a little.  I always sit mine out for a little while before I dose up.  I don't know about anybody else, but the Follistim made me super hungry!!
Married: 10/19/13 Started TTC: 12/07 Began Clomid 1/09, unsuccessful after 6 months of Clomid, 2 IUIs. Began seeing RE 7/09, Follistim, HCG, IUI, BFP. Baby girl born 5/4/10! TTC #2: 7/11. Started with exact same meds/procedures as daughter, BFN. Upped Follistim, 2nd IUI, BFN. Upped Follistim again, 3rd IUI, BFN on HPT, Beta results 10/5/11 - BFN.
