FTM of 2.5 week old - questions re: sleep, reflux, gas

DD has been having consistent trouble at night when she sleeps in her co-sleeper and I'm wondering if it might be gas or reflux or both.  During the day she naps really well in her swing but at night, when she's in her co-sleeper, she seems very uncomfortable, especially after feedings (about 3 hours apart at night). She grunts a lot, gets really red, writhes around and seems like she's in pain. Last night she woke up SCREAMING and needed lots of soothing to get back to sleep.  She also spits up quite a bit (she spits up a lot during the day too). I'm wondering if she might have bad gas or reflux. She also has hiccups a lot at night and during the day.

Does this sound like bad gas or reflux? Should I consider using drops or medication or anything else? Any recommendations? I know at 2.5 weeks her digestive system is still working itself out but I just don't like her seeming like she's in pain!

Also, is it totally unsafe for her to sleep in her swing at night? She seems so much happier and sleeps so much more peacefully in the swing than in her co-sleeper but I'm worried about it not being completely flat. I've also heard good things about the Rock-n-Play and I'm thinking maybe that's a solution.

Any thoughts or recommendations are much appreciated!

  • Sounds like silent reflux! My LO has it and that sound a lot like what he started with. I would call your Pedi and go see them! =) Good Luck!

  • my DD is 3 months old and sleeps in her swing every night. she always has. we tried the pack n play and her crib for the first week or so, but resorted to the swing almost every night so we've just decided to go with it. she likes the elevation and the snuggly-feeling of the swing.

  • Call your pedi since it sounds like reflux. DS was diagnosed around the same age as your LO. He was sleeping in his crib when we first got home from the hospital but he kept waking up crying in pain. When we moved him to the Rock N Play in our room, he sleeps better. The Zantac he is taking also helps.

  • sounds like my DS, we have him sleeping in his rock n play sleeper and thickening his bottles with gelmix and he's a new baby!
  • We are going through the exact same thing with our 3.5 week old!!!   I started reading all about reflux on the bump and online and was so confused.   Some of the symptoms were not the same as what we were experiencing.

During our first 2 weeks home our LO was so content and happy....that all changed last week.  She started to constantly fuss and randomly start screaming.  At first we thought it was gas and did drops, but that didn't help.

We finally went to the doctor and he thinks it's reflux.

Reading online some said that their reflux babies fussed while being fed....but our LO wants to eat constantly and loves feeding time.  Our doc said that babies with reflux sometimes want fed all the time because it calms the acid and makes them feel better.

She's also very uncomfortable most of the time....squirming around, arching back, tons of crazy noises.  I can even see that she's trying to swallow, like something really yucky was in her mouth.   And she HATES to be laying flat!   We tried a bassinet in our room and it did not work....we actually do use the Rock-n-Play and it has been amazing!   It's so portable, we use it upstairs in our bedroom at night and then carry it downstairs to use during the day.  It has a slight incline, which she loves.

She went from hardly ever spitting up to doing it quite a bit.  Sometimes when I burp during feeding, sometimes right after feeding, sometimes 2 hours after feeding.

We just started Zantac yesterday and heard that it could take a few days to take affect, but it already seems to be working (she might just be having a good day)....she's not fussed nearly as much today.

I would suggest going to the doctor.  I know how hard it is to see your baby unhappy :(

  • Sounds like reflux, especially due to the spitting up and that your LO is able to sleep at an incline without problem.  Talk to your doctor.

For whatever it's worth, our pedi told us we could let LO sleep upright in a swing.  We ended up buying a rock n' play and it has been a lifesaver (in addition to Zantac and rice cereal).  GL!
