Talk to me about grocery shopping with 2u2

When I go grocery shopping I put my 7month old in the front seat of the shopping cart & my 21 month old inthe open part of the cart where the groceries go. Every single time I shop I get evil looks & a comment about how unsafe it is for my 21 month old to ride in the czrt. Well I can let him walk bc he runs away, I cant put them in a stroller bc there is no room for groceries. I would used the kid friendly cart with two attached seats but then my 7 month old would be too far away from me & scream the hole time. I would shop withouy them at night but dh works out of town alot on call, so I cant plan around it. My kids hVe never fell outa cart but I dont know another way to shop with them . Anybody else do something different?

I was going to recomeend baby wearing.  Stick out tongue  My 14 mo old is 18 lbs and I still wear her so my 3 yo can sit in the cart & I only have 1 "loose" child to watch.

  • I put one in a baby carrier and the other in the cart. When I'm at my favorite store, we just get the airplane cart and they both sit in the airplane right in front of me. Before DD could sit in that part, I would put her infant seat on one side of the airplane and DS fit next to her on his side of the airplane.

ETA: I still carry my 27lb DS on my back in the Ergo carrier. I carry DD (16lb) on my front in the same carrier.

  • We had a weird time when DD was too heavy/awkward in the carrier and then they could sit together in the "car" carts or ones with 2 seats on the top.  It is easier, but I still stress out because they are hard to push and the kids are unpredictable!

  • My husband travels as well and I wasn't taking them with me.  So I have a babysitter who watches them every Monday for a couple of hours and I go out and get everything I need for the week.  It works out great for me.

  • The only options are wearing the baby, putting the baby in the infant carrier inside the shopping cart and put your oldest on the seat, doing what you're doing now or the carts made for 2 kids.

Personally, I use the cart made for 2 and it works fine.

  • For now, I do what you do and I've never received a dirty look. I would rather her sit in the large part of the cart than run away from me. When #3 is here I'll probably start using the carts with seats for 2 and put the baby in his infant seat in the big part or carry him.

DD is getting to the point where it is easier for all if she walks, but pushing the cart with one hand, while holding her hand (especially a full cart) is awkward to say the least.

We're going to be getting or making this so DD has a specific thing to hold besides my hand.

Maybe you should try a different baby carrier?  I know that some are better for bigger kids than others.  I hear good things abotu wearing toddlers in Bobas or kinderpacks although I haven't tried either.  I currently wear my 7 month old in a becco butterfly II on my back and LOVE IT!  She is only about 16 lbs though.  I wouldn't worry about putting one in the main cart if you find it  safe.  Let people scowl.

I would find a sitter to watch one or both so you can go shopping once a week. I couldn't imagine taking both of my crazy kids grocery shopping together, lol!

  • DH is gone for 3 wks at a time, so I have no option. I do have friends that offer to watch them for an hour, but I feel bad sometimes. I make it very structured, I make  a detailed list and get in an out in 45 mins. They sit in the double car cart and love it. Before that I would but DD in the ergo--very comfortable with a  lot of weight. OR I put DD on my hip with a ring sling and DS in the cart. You may want to look for another store that has a double cart, its worth it. BEfore DH leaves I stock up on items I need, and then only have to go for milk, eggs, cheese, sometimes diapers, when he is gone. It makes my life easier.

  • Here is how I have gone grocery shopping by myself over the years:

With two kids (19 months apart) - DS in the seat part of the cart, DD in the basket/main part of the cart.  As they got older, I would sometimes use the "car" carts or other distractions. I didn't have an Ergo carrier with DS - wish I had; would have been so much easier!

With 3 kids - DD is the seat part, other two in the cart or standing on the sides of the cart (or if the store has a "car" we use that - they think it is awesome!).  At Costco, they have two seats up front so DS will sometimes ride in that if his listening skills are not the best.  I also wore DD#2 alot.  I get lots of weird comments about how busy I am, etc but I try to smile (especially since I am visibly showing with our 4th.

With 4 (coming in March) - will wear the baby, DD in the seat, DS on the side of the cart, DD#1 walks along side (she will be 7).

DH thinks I am crazy to take all of them to the store, but they love to go shopping!
