Food Allergy

new here...egg & peanut allergy

hey there!  i just found out yesterday that my son has a class 4 egg allergy and a class 6 peanut allergy.  we knew he was allergic to eggs after he had scrambled eggs a few weeks ago and broke out in hives/redness all over.  he eats breads/pastas/etc. all of the time and never has a problem, but the plain scrambled eggs caused a reaction.  for that reason, his pediatrician ordered a food panel.  the nurse called me yesterday with the results and said we have to be very VERY careful with peanuts because of the high class of the allergy that showed on the test.  i'm a little freaked out by it because sooo many things have peanut/peanut oil/possibility of peanut contamination.  plain eggs are easy to stay away from, but peanuts are a different story.  i'm also nervous because he hasn't had a reaction before because he hasn't had peanuts in anything, so i don't know what to expect for a reaction if he ever does.  would it be wise to request an epi-pen, or is that even how it works?  just looking for some reassurance/suggestions on how to handle.  thanks so much :)

Re: new here...egg & peanut allergy

  • and why haven't they given you a RX for an epipen yet?   Get one today and keep the epi pen with your child at all times. Both egg and peanut are very high.. level 4 is high!

  • thanks ladies!  i called the pediatrician's office & he called me in an epi-pen.  i'm going to pick it up after work.  they also gave me the printout of duncan's lab results from the allergy profile:

    allergen                                kU/L           Class

    egg white                                25.80            4

    peanut                                    >100             6

    wheat                                     0.63              1

    walnut                                     <0.35            0

    codfish                                    <0.35            0

    milk                                          0.76             2

    soybean                                  2.17               2

    maize/corn                               <0.35            0

    shrimp                                      <0.35            0

    scallop                                       <0.35           0

    clam                                           <0.35           0

    sesame seed                             0.44             1

milk & soy are at moderate levels, but he drinks whole milk every day and has never had a problem. what do you guys make of that?  should i avoid?  i'm going to get a referral to take him to an allergy specialist at children's mercy hospital in kansas city, but just wanted to see what you thought.  thanks so much!

  • These numbers do not always dictate the severity of a reaction.  My son's initial blood test only show a moderate level for PB, but he had an anaphylactic reaction when he accidentally got some. You may not always outwardly see a reaction either. Good luck with the allergist!!

very similar numbers to my son's results when he was first tested.

Regarding milk, my allergist once told me (and i read it also in a book) that if you gets tested for allergies (even though you're not allergic to anything), there might be things that come up positive but we never react to it b/c our body knows how to handle it.

I would probably watch her very closely with milk.. I'm not sure if i personally would keep her on cows milk with those numbers (but I'm also not a fan of cows milk -hello, vegan here!) and soy gives me the creeps.  there are many alternatives.  Either way -i would watch her very closely with pretty much everything.

My son had a .45 (or something like that) with sesame seeds also and had pretty bad reactions..  much worse reactions to some of the things he was tested higher on (made me so confused!).  So you also have to determine what works and what doesn't.  Keep a food journal.

Remember - sesame is also called tahini and it's in many lipsticks.  I would make sure no one kisses your child on the lips (or face) any more. -this was a hard one with the IL's!

I would avoid casein (milk protein).. i've heard of people with milk allergies being ok w/ milk but not with casein (pls correct me if i'm wrong here since i only heard this recently from someone else.)
