AmyG- sleeping and feeding on demand

My DD is 18 days old.  She is doing great with feeding/latching as far as I can tell.  She gained her birth weight back and then some at her 10 day appointment.  I have two questions.  First of all is it normal for an infant this young to go 4 or more hours at night without feeding?  Last night she ate at 10pm and then didn't get up until 210am to feed.  She wasn't completely awake when she fed.  Also sometimes during the day she will go almost 3.5 hours without eating now.  There are times where she will eat every hour though too.  Is it okay for her to have such an irregular pattern right now?  She is getting 8-12 feedings and has good amounts of wet/dirty diapers.  Do I have to wake her to feed or just keep letting her feed on demand?  TIA and sorry if these are stupid questions.  I am a FTM so of course I worry!

  • Hey! I'm butting in. :)

You only need to wake her until she regains her birth weight. As long as she's done that, she'll eat when she needs to. Just keep and eye on those wet and poopy diapers. GL!

  • Butting in as well. It sounds perfectly normal. DS slept great for the few months (enjoy it while you can!). I wouldn't wake to feed. I wouldn't let her sleep more than 3-4 hours during the day so she will sleep at night. I would also try to encourage more feedings during the day and she might drop a feeding or two during the night. But that's up to you.
