Pregnant after IF

Third Tri girls- Leg Cramps??

I woke up to the worst leg cramp in my right calf this morning.  I know this is a late pregnancy symptom (I think I recall YellowDaisy posting about it a while back) and didn't expect to experience it so soon.  This was worse than any leg cramp I've ever had.  It kept coming back after relaxing for a total of 5 cramps.  My DH had me drink 2 full glasses of water to calm it down.  I didn't think that water would help but it did. Has anyone else experience these and do you have a good remedy?

  • YES! I posted this exact same thing a week or so ago. They are awful! I got some home remedy suggestions such as drink pickle juice, take a spoonful of mustard, eat bananas etc. My FIL found an article about what causes it and what helps, apparnetly a magnesium supplement with potassium and zinc in it is suppose to cure it. I'm planning to ask my doc about it tomorrow.

Drink lots of water and try and flex your foot during the cramp, good luck!

  • yes, i have had them. they are SO friggin' painful, i literally thought my muscle was going to detach from my leg.

i read that stretching your legs before bed time can help. i also read that flexing your foot and rotating your ankles clockwise several times, then counter-clockwise several times can help. once i started doing these things, i haven't (knock on wood) experienced any cramps.

pickle juice???  I love pickles but the thought of drinking the juice makes me want to barf.  I'll try the mustard and bananas though.  Thanks.

When do you do the flexing and rotating of your ankles?  During the cramp or before bed?  I tried flexing during the cramp and it helped a tiny bit.

  • yes, I've had a few of them during our vacation at 27-28 weeks. It seems to stop now. I think it happened because I walked a lot during vacation and got too tired. I was lucky enough that they got better every time I flex my leg during the cramp.

  • I have one that hits almost every morning... I have to flex and point my foot to get it to go away... I dont remember exactly which one I do first but if I do the wrong one it comes on stronger.

  • extending my heal really seems to help; my DH tries to rub it, but that makes it worse. I'm sorry you're experiencing them -- they're awful!! And my calf is always sore for a couple of days :( boo.

That seems like incentive to know which one is the right one! :-)

I do bananas when mine are really bad, and since taking an iron supplement they have cooled off. Flexing has always helped if I am awake enough to know what I'm doing.

One of these actually woke me up about a month ago and I was apparently moaning really loudly about it and DH thought I was going into early labor. Psych!

After 2 losses, IVF #2 brought us our little boys.

  • I posted this same thing about 2 weeks ago when I woke up in the middle of the night with the worst.cramp.ever.  It was the most painful cramp I've ever experienced and I felt paralyzed for several minutes because I any movement = pain.

I've experienced it one other time since and I followed someone's advice on here and started to flex my foot (it was on my foot this time, not my calf) and it actually made it better.

sorry, I know they suck BAD, I was almost in tears when I felt it and DH got scared because the way I was complaining and hunched over he thought I was in labor!

  • I had my first one during pregnancy this morning!  My left leg and it hurt like Hell!

I used to get them in high school when I was on the swim team, but this went on and on.  Plus I can hardly sit up so I couldn't even reach my leg to rub it!   :/
