Baby Food Makers? Yay or Nay?

We're getting closer and closer to starting solids with my daughter.  Does anyone have any experience or opinions about the baby food makers on the market (Beaba Babycook, Baby Bullet, etc.)?

Part of me really wants to buy one for the convenience.  But the other part of me knows that I probably have sufficient larger appliances (food processor, blender) that could accomplish the same goal of creating wholesome handmade baby food.

Re: Baby Food Makers? Yay or Nay?

  • Yay for BabyCook - one appliance that lets you do it all. No cleaning multiple things. It steams, chops and blends.

  • My mom wondered if I'd like a baby bullet so I think we'll be getting one. It isn't something I had on my "must have" list but I appreciate her thought and excitement about her grandbaby having home made food.

  • Not necessary IMO.  I made all of my DS's baby food and I plan on doing it for DD when we start solids.  I made a weeks worth of food using my food processor and then I would store it in the ice cube trays with lids that I got from BRU.

  • Nay.  I used our blender for purees.  She only ate purees for 3 months so would have been a waste to buy a special appliance.

I do recommend silicone trays for storage (just until frozen, then pop out and put in ziploc baggies)

  • Nay.

A food processor or blender do the same job. No need for an overpriced piece of equipment that will only get used for a few months when you've likely got everything you need in your kitchen already. Steam (in microwave or in steamer basket), puree in fp or blender, freeze in ice cube trays. Easy.

  • Nay.  PPs have said it all.

  • I agree. I used my food processor for both kiddos (baby food was the excuse I gave my husband so that I could get a nice, new food processor!) :)

My kids only ate purees for a VERY short while. Once they could put pieces of food in their mouth, they lost interest in purees completely.

I would opt for a nice food processor that you can use for many years.

  • Nay. Babies only eat purees for a few months and a food processor will suffice.

  • Nay. I just baked or steamed all of DS food, and then pureed it in my food processor, adding water until it was the right consistency. All you need besides that are a few ice cube trays and ziploc baggies, and you're good to go!

  • I have registered for one as we don't have a food processor or a microwave and our blender cannot handle hot items or the seal doesn't seal in the food when you hit blend.  I researched a lot and I ended up opting for the Breeza.

  • I used an immersion blender, it worked great!! Super easy, make a week or two worth on a sunday afternoon. I think I bought a total of 3 baby food jars total/ever!

  • I use just a blender and ice cube trays. No need to buy a whole system.  Do yourself a favor and save your money.

This, and often I felt like even my FP wasn't big enough to get as much as I wanted. One of the baby food steam/puree machines wouldn't make enough to fill an ice cube tray, IMO. DD didn't do purees nearly as long as DS, so I just started steaming things and putting them in the fridge whole so I could pull out a little and mash it only as much as she needed. A baby food maker would have only had a month worth of use for her.

  • We do baby led weaning but if I were to do purees, I would just use the food processor or blender. Most of the baby ones seem to be plastic instead of glass and I'm a little anal about toxins.
