Sleep/Nap schedule

I feel like I'm tempting the fates but I need to change Tess's schedule.  She is a great sleeper, especially compared to her crazy insomniac sister.  Right now she wakes up between 7:30-8:00.  She would take a nap around 9:30 or 10:00 if I let her (she's usually at MDO during that time) but even if she doesn't nap then she isn't tired or cranky.  She takes at least a 2.5-3 hours nap every single afternoon.  But lately she's been staying up later at night, going to bed around 9:30 or 10:00.

I have to leave the house by 3:00 to pick Emma up from school which means I'm cutting into Tess's afternoon nap.  But I have to have her up in the morning by 7:30 once she starts back to school.  This til 8:00 and put her in the car in her pj's to take Emma to school and she pitched a fit the entire time because we left the house before she had breakfast.

Sorry to ramble, but I guess my question is do you think if I figure out a way to get her to go to bed earlier at night and start shortening her afternoon nap that she'll adjust? Ideally I would like for her to go to be asleep at 8:30, wake at 7:30, nap 1:30-2:30.  I feel like she isn't ready to drop her afternoon nap but we don't get home from MDO until 1:30 at the earliest and I have to pick Emma up at 3:00.

Any opinions? Or WWYD?

Re: Sleep/Nap schedule

  • Geneva goes down at 7:30 p.m. and sleeps until I get her up around 6:30 a.m. When she naps at school, they nap from 12:30 - 2:30. When she naps at home, it's more like 1:30 - 3:30. I try to never let her nap past 4 p.m. If she does, it tends to mess with bedtime and she gets terrible nap hangover.

Just try shifting her bedtime earlier and see if you can wear her out for that earlier nap. Then, she can nap all the way until you have to get Emma. She may be taking that extra nap because she's not going to bed early enough.

  • I don't know enough about it yet to be of much help (we are so far from it right now!) but the Ferber book has lots of helpful information and instructions about how to shift naps and nighttime sleep.  I bought my copy from Amazon for about $7 used.

  • I would try and put her down for her nap at 12:30.  I think that is the time that most schools start naps.

Also, I've found that the earlier I put my kids to sleep, the better they are.  They go to sleep easier, sleep longer, wake up later.  When I start venturing into the 9 pm bedtime, (like during vacation) they turn into raving hyper monsters.

Yeah, that would be ideal except she goes to MDO on Mon-Thurs from 9:00-1:00 and it's at least 1:30 before we get home.

She went down at 12:30 today for her nap and slept til 2:30 and here it is 10:00 at night and she's wideassopen.  I don't think there is a winning solution, I have to drag her around to all of Emma's practices after school so there is no way I can get her on a consistent bedtime routine before 8:30.
