Allergy Appointment ?

My DD has her first allergist appointment on Thursday. I was wondering what I should expect from this appointment. I know they'll take her history and probably do an exam. We were told no antihistamines for 72 hours so I am assuming they will also do a skin test. She had a RAST done a few months ago (negative) by her GI, but it tested the top 8 allergens and she hasn't been exposed to the majority of those things ever - not even milk or soy due to complex GI issues. Would they order additional blood testing to test for the things she has shown reactions to in the past? About how long does the testing/1st appointment take? She is 18 mos old. Thank you!

Re: Allergy Appointment ?

  • If they said no antihistamines then they are definitely doing skin testing.  I think they will do exactly what you said.  Get her history (reactions, etc), they may look at her skin to check for eczema, they will want to know what she eats.  My daughter's first appointment was between 1-2 hours.  We were sent for blood testing after the appointment to confirm what was positive on the skin testing.  GL!

  • Thank you so much! I was expecting it to take a lot longer, so now I feel better. We've seen many specialists, so we have the routine down for the most part. Thanks again!!
  • Family history, health history for your little one, and I'd almost guarantee a skin test.  My lo had a blood test ordered by the pedi before we went.  I wouldn't imagine the appt itself would be more than an hour or so.  Good luck!!

  • The good news is the actual skin test only takes about 20 minutes, less if your LO starts reacting quickly. We were re-tested at 18 months. I just let DD down and let her explore the room, play with a glove balloon, the nurse gave her a tongue depressor (who knew they were so interesting?) and before you know it, they were coming back to read the test results.
