Babysitters

Hello ladies, I'm looking for some help with babysitters. Other than family, where/how have you found sitters? I don't seem to have any good avenues to find one. (We don't go to church, don't know any local students, etc.) Also, how do you know how much to pay per hour? I got the name of a girl (who's 14) from my SIL, but she asked for $10/hr. Call me crazy, but I just think that's ridiculous! When I babysat in high school I got what ever they gave me... and it never came close to $10/hr. (even for 2-3 kids!) I might be wiling to pay someone older with experience that much, but not a 14 year old with little experience. I'm not looking for anyone on a real regular basis, just someone that I can call once in a while if DH and I want a date night, if I have an appointment to go to, etc. Any suggestions on where to find someone trust worthy and at a reasonable price? TIA :)

Re: Babysitters

  • My 18 year old step-daughter baby sits for us and her brother loves her to death so that works for us.  She is available for hire, depending on the area you are in.  We are in Mechanicsburg.

  • We pay $10 an hour, for two kids.  Our occasional babysitters are college students.  I'm not sure how to go about finding a sitter though, sorry.
  • Paying $10 an hour for a 14 year old to watch your child is crazy. I'm 21 and have a certificate for Early Childhood Education and I don't even expect someone to pay me that much.

You can find babysitters on care.com. I use the site to find local babysitting jobs and love it.

btw.I am looking to babysit on occasion. I currently babysit for a couple in Millersville once in a while for them to go on date nights. Not sure what area you are from, I live in the Lancaster area.

  • Actually, $10 is about the going price for babysitters in this area.  Anywhere between $8-$10.  I don't think $10 is a lot, especially since you have two children.  We use a local high school senior and pay her $10/hour.  She's awesome and very good with Sophia.
  • Sorry, I should clarify that I don't think $10/hr is a lot if the teen is older, at least 17 IMO and has experience.

Spunkielexis196- we are in Susquehanna Township. Would she be willing to come that far? Feel free to send me a PM if she would be interested in meeting!

NMK1208 - I just found out about care.com from a friend today too. It looks like a great resource! I'm definitely going to give it a try! We are in the Harrisburg area, so it might be too far you.

summerbridesara- I agree with you, if I could find someone 17 or older WITH experience, I could see paying $8-$10/hour. Just not for someone 14 with very little experience. I'm not sure I'd even feel comfortable with a 14 year old watching my kids... regardless of what it costs! :)

  • Ive also heard good things about sittercity.com but Ive never used it myself. We're facing the same debacle though of no babysitters other than family and my sister is the only reliable family member so I hate to constantly ask her. My ideas so far are to steal one of her daycare workers because she knows them already OR post an ad at Messiah College (another college thats close to you) to entice college students! Thats all I got!

  • If your LOs attend daycare, then I've often heard of parents using one of the daycare workers that their kids know/like as an occasional babysitter.  The other avenue that may be worth checking into would be a local college's education department.  I went to Ship, and we frequently (probably a couple times per month) got mass emails sent out to all of the elementary education majors from people looking to hire babysitters, and asking those interested to contact the person.  People would also post flyers w/ those little tear-off strips on the main info bulletin boards in the education building on campus.  Worked out well for us - lots of my friends and I got babysitting/nannying jobs that way, and the additional bonus for the parents was that education majors have their state clearances already, so the parents would know that they were hiring trustworthy sitters.
  • Hi-- I just recently got married, so I've been lurking this board, and the local board on The Nest.  I can personally say that I've been babysitting for over 9 years, and I am on care.com.  I have found a few interested families from the website, so I would start there.  I am a teacher, so I'd be available for a night or weekend if you need someone still.  You can also find my information on care.com, and I have all my clearances.

Also-- I am from York, and not Shippensburg, I went to college there, but I'm not sure how to change my location.
