If you delivered at Rex, how was your experience?

If you delivered at Rex, how was your experience in general? Did you like the staff and if you tried to labor naturally for awhile, were they accepting of this? Regardless, of the type of birth you had, I am just looking for opinions. Thanks!

Re: If you delivered at Rex, how was your experience?

  • I LOVED Rex! I had a great birth experience.  I went in hoping to go as long as possible without an EPI.  walked the halls for 1.5 hours, came back asked to be checked, got my epi and rested until my body was ready to push.  No further interventions.  The nurses were wonderful, the lactation consultants were good and helpful, I would totally recommend Rex.

  • I had a wonderful experience the first time. I loved my labor nurse (I actually saw her and had her briefly the 2nd time). I labored until I was 7cm w/out an epi. I used the birthing ball and the birthing bar. No one forced anything on me and I did ask for the epi right when I got the the hospital and it was not an issue. No meds were ever pushed on me. They took really good care of me, but I did end up with a c-section. Lactation was very good and came to see me daily and spent a lot of time with me.

The 2nd time around I was there for a repeat c/s I wasn't all that thrilled with the nursing staff. I had one that I really liked, and in general they were nice/pleasant, but I did not find them overly accommodating this time.  My doctor was great, the anesthesiologist that did my spinal was great (numb immediately) and everyone in the OR was wonderful to me. It was the aftercare I found lacking. DS was taken from me for 5 hours and no one bothered to inform us what was going on, my own doctor came and checked on me and gave me an update. We had to demand to go see him. I was left sitting in a rocking chair with a catheter unable to move and no one came to help me back to bed. Lactation came once and was not helpful. I don't know what the deal was, if it was because I was a 2nd time mom or what. I also got one of the two "new" beds in the hospital that kept adjusting all night long and no one knew if you could turn it off (you couldn't), my room was by the emergency exit so every time a baby came by the ankle bracelets set the alarm off (all night long). I begged to go home after 2 nights and they let me! Thank God! I declined all narcotics after the 1st day and no one pushed anything on my but Motrin (and laxatives ha ha). Also wanted to add I broke out into a terrible rash from something they put around my c/s incision and suffered for a week, that was not pleasant at all. UGG!!

*ETA-I hope this didn't come off bitchy but it is what happened exactly, so I wanted to share my experience.  Obviously I had two major surgeries with them and everything went as planned!

  • I had an awesome experience at Rex. I loved all of my nurses (except for maybe one). The food was good, all of the staff was nice, the bed was relatively comfortable (well, of course I was exhausted, so... hehe) I honestly have absolutely no complaints. I do wish I'd gotten one of the larger, newer rooms, but that wasn't a huge deal in the end.

Some of my fondest memories of right after Holly was born were the days (I spent 3 nights there) at the hospital. I kind of didn't want to leave..hehe.

Oh, and I can't speak for the natural labor thing, since I was induced, and had a c/s for failure to progress past 4 cm 18 hrs later. I kind of just went with the flow and did what was suggested by the nurses and my doctor, but I never felt pushed into anything by anyone.

  • Overall I had a good experience at Rex.  My labor with DD#1 didn't go like I had hoped (ended up with a c/s) but I didn't feel like anything was pushed on me.  I didn't get an epi right away and was able to walk around, use a birthing ball, etc.  But with no progress, they suggested I start pitocin (which was unbearable, hence the epi).  DD#1 didn't like the pitocin so I ended up in a c/s because I stopped progressing on my own.

With DD#2, I had a repeat c/s.  I thought for both the nursing staff was great, food was good and I didn't have any compliants about being at Rex.  I did think they were more hands off after DD#2 was born (I assumed because this wasn't new to me) and I was actually allowed to go home only after 2 nights (which I thought was quick for a c/s).

We'll be going through Rex again for this one.

  • I loved my delivery experience overall. I was induced, and went 16 hours before I decided I wanted something for pain. About 2 hours later, they determined I'd stopped progressing and I had to have a c-section and was told it'd probably be a few hours, but 30 minutes later, they came to get me. The staff was great, and my nurses actually encouraged us to send the baby to the nursery so we could get some rest at night and didn't bother us if we were asleep unless it was time for a feeding. I really liked the menu as well... :) I'll be having DS2 there as well.
  • I was happy with all of my care with the exception of one post partum nurse who was worthless and didnt do anything for me! (but thats a possiblity wherever u deliver at honestly).  I went into the hospital wanting to labor as long as I could stand without an epi. My L&D nurses were great esp. the 2nd one who I was with from 7am-4pm and trying to work with me to get him to progress and it was really nice cuz she'd had 2 kids of her own and was really supportive when the dr. decided it was time for a section and said that i did all that i could do to try and get him to come down and it helped that she'd been in a simliar boat with her 1st born. She even came to see me in Recovery and meet DS. The staff in the OR was AMAZING and they answered all my questions as things were happening and made sure i was comfortable and informed the whole time...the anesthesiologist was great and took our camera and was taking pictures immediately upon DS's birth. My post partum nurses were great esp. the one I was lucky enough to get each night. as well as Lactation. The food and rooms were great too. All in all I had a good experience and have no second thoughts about having another child there.

  • I had a wonderful experience there. My goal was to get as medicated as quickly and as much as possible, and they handled that right upon arrival. I had two different nurses during labor, and they were both great. There was a night time nurse that I LOVED!! I seriously cried when she came in the final night to say good bye. There was a day nurse I had one of the days that wasn't my favorite, but like Ashley said, you can get that anywhere. The doctor really dictates a lot of the how long you labor, how many positions you try, etc, type of stuff more than the hospital you're delivering at. Rex is known for having very good cafeteria food, and I could not get enough of their cheeseburgers!

  • I delivered both my girls there. I had mixed experiences both times --horrid nurse upon arrival with Keira and horrid nurse immediately after delivering Callie. But I was there 4 nights with both of them and only had 1 bad nurse each time.

    Food was excellent!

My second birth was horrible, but I don't blame Rex. I blame the effing anesthesiologists. It was a nightmare. However, I wouldn't change hospitals over it if we ever had a 3rd baby, That group of docs work at various area hospitals so it's not a "Rex" thing.

I would highly recommend the hospital for sure. I definitely agree with them being more hands off after #2. I was left alone a lot and definitely treated like I knew what I was doing/what was going on vs. the first go-round when I feel they were much more thorough with explaining things etc.

  • I too loved Rex! Great staff, facilities are super nice and clean. And the food rocks-you get to order from a menu at every meal! I did have 1 really bad PP nurse. I did complain and it turned out she had been floated to PP unit-she was terrible. But all my other nurses were more than I ever could've imagined! No one was pushy, let me make my own decisions as far as interventions and advocated for me when needed.

  • I have not delievered at Rex yet...but I will say that my sister had a wonderful experience.  She actually drove to Raleigh from Emerald Isle for both of her delieveries because she couldn't imagine having children anywhere else.  I am a Rex employee and I cannot say enough good things about my co-workers in Women's and Children's.  The nurses there love their job and the nurse managers are wonderful and they only hire the best.  We also have an incredible Special Care Nursery which is another important factor to consider.  It's not as large as WakeMed's but the equipment is brand new and the best available.  The nurses there are very attentive and because it's smaller you will recieve more care and attention.  No one plans to deliver early or have complications so its comforting to know that they are prepared regardless.

I may be biased but I don't think you will have a better experience anywhere else.  I look forward to experiencing it for myself in February!

  • I had 2 experiences at Rex so far (this will be my 3rd) and I can't imagine going anywhere else. They are awesome. The first time was my miscarriage and they were saints. The second time was last August with my c-section with DD and again, everyone I came across for the 5 days I was there was absolutely wonderful. And the facility is clean. The food isn't half bad either.

  • One of my best friends had her baby boy there last month and she said she had a great experience there.  She said they took very good care of her and the baby.  She told me she would recommend anybody to have a baby there.
