food allergies? (XP)

hi ladies!  I'm hoping you can help out a lurker with a diet issue.

I just found out that DD has a milk allergy and I have to cut out all dairy and soy for two months if i want to keep breastfeeding.  As cheese and ice cream are basically food groups as far as I'm concerned, this is not going to be fun.

Anyone have any experience with either or both of these food allergies?  Milk and soy seem to be in so many products, and I'd love to know some shortcuts.  TIA!

  • I'm sorry to hear about your DD allergies. I have multiple food allergies that greatly restrict my diet (corn, chicken, eggs among others). My best advice is to shop at Whole Foods. They tend to have the greatest selection for those of us with limited diets.

I believe Whole Foods carries a coconut milk ice cream that is dairy free and I've heard that it is really good. There is also coconut milk yogurt too. Try posting this on the food allergy board - I know there are alot of mom's on there going through something similar and they have great suggestions. Good luck!

  • our ped suspected a milk allergy in the beginning and i had to cut dairy out for a while. since i was downing a gallon of milk a week by myself and tend to have several types of cheese on hand at any moment i was less than thrilled. trader joe's is also good for looking for milk free products or if you really want some great help check out a hippie grocery store like sevananda. it sucks for dairy lovers, i feel for ya!

  • My 2nd son Wesley had this.  I had to stop BF completely because we had to go on Neocate (delivered to the door formula).  I wish you lots of luck on BF. I was heartbroken I could not do this with Wes. He was on this formula after a year old.  Finally he is on whole milk.

Foods..if he still has it when you start table food let me know and I can give you some ideas to give .

  • Ds has a soy allergy so we avoid it completely. Dh and I eat paleo so we don't eat soy and eat very little dairy (just some butter or heavy cream on occasion). We eat fresh stuff and avoid processed foods to avoid those things. We eat meat, eggs, seafood, nuts, fruit and veggies. We don't eat grains, soy, legumes or highly processed foods. It's A LOT more work as far as shopping fresh and cooking but it's so much healthier for us all. Plus, I've lost 40 lbs since we started eating this way and I started exercising. We don't often use "substitute" products but have on occasion had homemade coconut milk ice-cream, almond milk, coconut milk, etc. We use coconut aminos instead of soy sauce for stir fry. Read all labels....you will be SHOCKED at everything that has soy. Dh and I don't eat bread but I do send some to school for ds. I send the Honey Wheat bread that you buy in the bakery section at Publix (not all the stores carry it). I didn't check it for dairy, but I know it's soy-free. Let me know if you have any questions. Google Paleo recipes or check out marksdailyapple.com to find dairy/soy free recipes.
