Vent: Non-mommy friends

I really hate when my non-mommy friends tell me what I am doing with my daughter is wrong!  Today we were at a friend's house and we were playing with DD.  We were talking about how she is rolling now, but I mentioned that she doesn't really roll in the crib.  And my friend said, "well that's good because you don't want her to sleep on her stomach", and I said "she actually sleeps better on her stomach and we let her sleep that way sometimes".. to which she replied (with a shock of horror on her face) "even though it is the number one cause of SIDS????"  SERIOUSLY???  Does she think that I am aware of the risk factors of SIDS?  I get that sleeping on her tummy can possibly impair her breathing and can cause the unthinkable, but I also know that SIDS seems to be highest in months 2 and 3, and that ultimately they don't know what causes SIDS.

It just really bothers me that she said that to me in such a nervy way, like she's the know-all on babies, when she doesn't even have a kid!!!  I'm not trying to say that SIDS isn't serious, because it is- I'm just saying that it's my kid, and I know what is best for her.  UGH!

/end vent.

  • Someday she'll have one of her own and her non-mommy friends will dish that crap right back.  Sorry that you had to set through that one.  Mommy is ALWAYS right :-}

    Just know that she probably meant well, but it came out all wrong. The Back to Sleep and Back is Better campaigns have got back sleeping ingrained on everyone's mind. What people don't realize is that once your baby has neck and head control, plus rolls, well there isn't much you can do about the tummy sleeping.

  • um, you might be overreacting a tiny bit. She's right...belly sleeping is a risk factor for SIDS. You don't have to be a mom to know that. This is not worth getting all up in arms about. I'd just say "thanks!" and move on.
    "Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you've got about a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies. God damn it, you've got to be kind." - Kurt Vonnegut
  • Its funny. I was so worried about SIDS and everything else baby related until I had her for about 2 weeks. (It helps that I have the Angelcare Monitor.) Then you get to the point where you're so exhausted and finally realize that if your baby sleeps on her stomach and that affords you an extra few hours of sleep, for goodness sake let her sleep! Its IMPOSSIBLE to try to keep a rolling baby on her back if she wants to roll at night. Trust me, I've tried.

    Just wait until your friend has babies of her own, and then start drilling her on every little rule she's not following....

  • DD sleeps on her tummy all the time now.  She can roll both ways so we really can't stop her.  I'm not going to check on her all night long and wake her up to turn her over if she's on her tummy.  Pedi said if she can get herself on her tummy then it's okay to let her sleep that way.

  • My mom has always said (obviuosly joking) that ?if your baby only wants to sleep on top of the fridge, eventually you will get tired enough and put them up there.?  I think that is so true.  The hardest part about being a mom for me is taking all the advice and facts medical and otherwise and figuring out was is best for your family.  Yes there is a risk for SIDS but there is also harm done from lack of sleep, especially at this age when there little brains are growing so fast.

    She will figure that out someday, for now as my grandma says ?listen politely, and then do what you want anyway.?

    This is ALWAYS what I tell my non-mom friends who feel the need to critique something another mom does. My Gf's BFF's baby is pretty fussy apparently and she was saying something about how her GF doesnt ever put him down. He was like 4-5 momths old at the time. And this was in a group of friends, she was saying this. SO I just said "well he is way too young to manipulate and when you're baby is crying, you will do ANYTHING to calm them down". You dont know, so shut up!!

  • Yeah alex has been sleeping on his tummy every since he learned to roll over.(which was oh lord 4 months i think?)  Doc said its totally fine and that I just have to check on him before I go to sleep at night. But that there is still a risk and that it usually is in the early months when it's the worst chance of sids.

    But honestly a baby is going to sleep the way they want to.
