How do you clean the inside of sippy straws?

I am having trouble cleaning the actual straw portion of DS's sippies.  We have a fine brush tip on our bottle brush but it isn't narrow enough to fit in the straws.  The straws seem to gather milk, too - so I'm nervous I'm not cleaning them enough.  Anyone have a tip?

  • I throw mine in the dishwasher, and and they always come out looking clean.

  • I haven't been able to come up with a good solution for this either, as we don't have a dishwasher. So I end up only giving DS straw cups for water. He drinks milk from a regular sippy.

  • mine pops apart and the straw normally doesnt get yucky unless i let it sit too long and its easy to was out. My part that always gets icky is the spill part inbetween the straw that goes in the cup and the top portion. I use the small nipple/bottle cleaner. I stick it up in there since its a flexiable thingy.

  • I read in my Parents magazine that someone used the small paintbrushes like the really skinny ones. I have never tried it since we do not use the straws but it sounded like a great idea.

  • I have some of the Dr. Browns little brushes that were used for small parts of his bottles.

I put mine in the dishwasher, but Dr. Brown's makes very small, long brushes for cleaning the bottle parts. This would work well for the straw in the sippy cup if you're cleaning by hand.

Thank you, I'll have to check for these.  The one I have is too thick but maybe this is better.

We do have a dishwasher but I tend to wash everything by hand because we don't run the washer much.

Thank you all for the feedback!

We do this. I run hot water through the straw before putting them in and I figure the heat in the dishwasher should kill anything bad. I have also seen sippy straw cleaners at the store before if you wanted to be more thorough.

This!  You can buy them at BRU, but I haven't seen them at Target.  We also have purchased pipe cleaners in the past and they work great too!

  • I use the tiny brush that came with the Tommee Tippee anti-colic bottles.  It's basically a stiff pipe cleaner.

  • I have a bunch of the small Dr. Brown's brushes (for the internal valve of the bottle) that I use.  I love those things.  I clean droppers with them too.

this! since we don't have a dishwasher this is the only way I feel they get clean. And I also soak all of his straws and rubber stoppers in a cup of water and a splash of bleach every once in awhile.

  • I use the tiny brush from Dr. Browns that you would use to clean the valves/nipples on their bottles. I think you get a pack of 4 for a couple of dollars. I can get that the whole way up and back all of DS sippy straws.
