Ok, so I was lurking on the PG & TTC check-in and just wanted to give my 2 cents about the stroller question. For those non-lurkers, this was the question:
4. I'm having issues deciding on stroller/s to register or buy. I know I want the snap and go but the BOB seems really big/bulky but I'd like to have a jogging stroller to get in shape after baby, do I really "need" 3 different strollers? What have you all done or planning to do?
In my own experience I have owned 3 strollers. I'm also, oddly, very happy about all of those strollers! Here's my rundown and explanation:
Stroller #1: Snap N Go. You need it. Having a Bob with a car seat attachment is going to be much more difficult than the easy breezy-ness of the Snap N Go. Look on Craigslist. I got mine for about $25 dollars and when I was done with in, gave it to a friend who was about to have a baby. There is nothing more delightful than easily putting your sleeping newborn into a super light frame, they stay asleep, and you can get your shop on at Target. Give it to a friend and/or Bumpie when you're done with it.
Stroller #2: Jogging stroller. It has shocks. It turns easily. It's got a great basket. It takes me about two minutes to get it out of the car and set up, compared to the Snap N Go or umbrella stroller, which is more like 30 seconds. But if I'm going for a walk with a friend on the trail, this is the one I like to use. I don't regret buying it. If you're going to buy one, I say buy a good one. Bob, Baby Jogger. Mine is an EasyWalker brand. Just make sure you like it.
Stroller #3: Umbrella Stroller. It's 8 pounds, it takes me 30 seconds to set up, it survived a trip to California and back, and it's easy. Basically the Snap N Go and the Umbrella Stroller fulfill the same need, but in different time periods. I have the UppaBaby GLite, and I really like it. If I were to buy again, I'd probably get the GLuxe. Sturdier wheels and a recline.
I'm perfectly fine with having had three strollers (I only have/use the two now). If you really really really don't want three, from everything I've read online and the experiences of other bumpies, get a City Mini. Then get the car seat adapter and you're set.
Anyone else have stroller advice?
Re: "3 Strollers" Questions
My Blog
Really you only need 3 things.
An Ergo or a Becco carrier
An umbrella stroller (6-9lbs) that you can snap the infant seat into (AKA light weight travel system) several brands make this now)
A nice bike trailer/jogging stroller. (If you plan to have 2 kids or more within 3 or less years of each other buy the 2 seater) Check CL for a a used one to save $
My children are all 2 years apart (give or take 2 months) and I can easily manage with one child in the single stroller and one child in the ergo (or one in the ergo one in the shopping cart). For big all day outings with lots of walking we just take the bike trailer/jogging stroller (and stuff the ergo in there in case all 3 get tired.) I have never had need for anything else and my children have done A LOT of traveling with me.
I didn't need three strollers. I have a Peg Perego Pilko P3. It's not my favorite really but it did the job. It's not gigantic and it folds up pretty small for what it is. And the car seat attached onto it. Even now, it has a standing platform on the back so Ben can ride on it if he needs a break. That did not work when the car seat was in it though, which was a bummer.
I don't jog. So I didn't have any need for a jogger.
So that's really all I *needed*.
I did have others though. I bought a $15 umbrella stroller at Target for a plane trip. Biggest piece of crap. Not worth the $15.
I bought another cheap stroller at BRU that's like the Snap n Go frame (same company) but has a seat. Loved it. I used that on trips b/c it was smaller and easier to deal with and not worry that it got trashed on the airplane. It has a big basket and cup holders for me and the kid.
After I had Cooper, my friend gave me her Sit n Stand. I really like it. Did I *need* it? no. But it's nice to have.
I too am a 3 stroller gal.
I originally had a Graco that matched my infant seat. hindsight...I wouldn't have bought this one. I would have gone the snap n go route.
We also have a BOB and LOVE it! As PP mentioned, it turns on a dime and is just wonderful to handle. I wish I had just used this as my main stroller with #1.
We also have a cheapy BRU umbrella stroller. Great to keep in DH's car and we've taken that on our boat.
We've since sold the Graco and bought a Bumbleride twin when we had #2, and I also just recently bought a new single since the 4 year old doesn't like to sit for very long. The City Mini.
I am a stroller whore and they have ALL served a purpose. BUT, like PP said, go with the snap n go first since in theory, it will last you for as long as the baby is in the infant seat and you can evaluate what your stroller needs are.
I'll be a minimalist here - we only have a BOB and I love it, never wanted anything else. The infant seat attachment was super easy and it fit in the trunk of my sedan.
I did use a moby and then a bjorn, so there were trips where I just skipped the stroller altogether because it was just easier to carry.
If you are only going to get one stroller, definitely get a nice jogger like the BOB or similar.
I got the uppa baby vista, which was great til just this summer. She actually slept in the bassinet for 2 months. And we got the car seat adapter. I loved the big basket and it is sturdy enough to go around our no-sidewalk, some gravel neighborhood. I like that I can get the rumble seat if we ever have #2. Also great to turn the seat around so they can see you when you want.
At 19 months we bought an umbrella - uppa baby gluxe. Mostly because we wanted something smaller for travelling. Been great so far. Wish it was a bit more compact when folding. But I liked that the handles are a bit taller than most. It is easy to steer. Does not do as well over gravel.
I had 3 as well. The Snap and Go, BOB, and a Quinny for travel. The Snap and Go was awesome for the first few months and for a plane trip at 7mo. The Quinny was brought on 2 vacations and that?s about it. I like my cup holders and the ability to put the diaper bag on the stroller. The BOB was my main stroller. LOVE it. I never really jogged with it (but I did push a Dualie with 2 2yos in it for a 5k. It actually made jogging easier) but for parks and trails and BelleSq, it was amazing. I tried to be conscientious of its size so I never felt like that was an issue. I also had a Beco.
If I were to do it again, I?d get a snap and go, City Mini, and a Beco. Possibly a used good quality umbrella for travel.
Now they?re all for sale as my baby is no longer a baby. Sniff?
I have only owned 2 strollers, and probably could have done w/ just one.
Started w/ the travel system stroller and only used it a handful of times w/ the infant seat in it. Once she was big enough to sit in it, again only used it a couple of times. Sold it at a garage sale a couple months ago. It was so big and bulky I hated taking it anywhere. I used the Ergo whenever I could.
Bought a umbrellaish type stroller from BRU for $39 (their brand) that reclines, has a big basket and cup holders for me and her and it was been great. She refuses to sit in it much any more (@ 2yr 3mo) so it mostly just holds bags when we go shopping.
I thought about a jogging stroller- I do run - but I REFUSE to run w/ DD, or really anyone else for that matter. It is one of the very few things I do for me and myself only. Its my quiet escape time
If I had a jogger, I might be convinced to take my kid.

While I can see the need for three strollers I think a lot of it depends on if you plan to "wear" your baby. We have a travel system because I thought it would be nice to be able to use the infant seat in my stroller in all reality I have only used my stroller 3 times since LO was born. I would rather carry her, when she was new I used a K'tan and now we usually use the Ergo so I really didn't need to use the infant seat with the stroller. I am considering selling my entire travel system once LO grows out of her infant seat because I would prefer an umbrella stroller for the times I do want one.
We have 2 strollers and I only use 1. That being said, we aren't really "stroller people". We thought about our lives pre baby and what we do/where we go that we'd need a stroller. We travel a lot, but always wear the baby or he walks. My H has issues with me packing the house and how do we get it all from the car in to the airport. If I can't get it all with out a cart, I can't take it so we would rarely travel with a stroller.
We use the jogger a few times a week even almost 4 years later. I used the car seat attachment from day 1.
The answer will be dependent on your lifestyle, how active you are and what type of activities you do with your DC. Good luck with your decision!
Do not get the Bjorn. The Bjorns suck. Get a Moby for the infant time, or the Ergo with the infant insert... I loved the Moby and then the Ergo. I never had the infant insert so I'm not sure how it works but I'veheard it's good.
Thanks! I'm registered for the Ergo so fingers crossed we get it (otherwise I'm sure we'll still buy it). I'll check out the Moby too!
