Food Allergy

can intolerances develop over time?

Hi there,

I am brand new to this board.  I apologize my signature will not be updated but I had a little girl on May 10.  Emilia has always been small and has had some gassiness/ fussiness since day one.  i exclusively BF until she was 9 weeks old.  After a severe night of hysterical crying I took her to the pedi and they diagnosed her with a milk/ egg/ allergy.  Through thought I have added beef to the list.  I eliminated these things from my diet and her mood drastically improved.  The difficulty is that I am a grad student and as a family we are constantly on the run so I eat out a lot.  There hav ea been a few times when I have been contaminated accidentally I think.  Well anyway long story short she was really fussy on Sunday, I panicked and put her on soy formula because I was going on a business trip and I worried my BM was contaminated.  After a few hours of no relief we switched her to Neutramogen.  YES i know this was too soon.  Blame it on the momma leaving my baby panick hormones. The fussiness has not improved at all with any of these switches.   So i will quit babbling.  My question is could she have tolerated soy but now be developing a sensitivity?   I had a day of panick and said I was quitting BF but I have been pumping and dumping and I really don't want to quit.  I am considering 3 things and just trying to figure out what would be best.

Continue dairy/beef/egg free diet but be more strict about eating out etc...

Add soy to food I don't eat

Go to a complete elimination diet.  This just scares me because I am afraid of starving. I will do it if necessary but I am just thinking maybe I overreacted and I can just go back to dairy/egg/beef free.

Please forgive me for this rambling. I haven't slept well and I am just worn out with worry.

Thanks!

  • Did she ever have a RAST test? is this how you found out she's allergic to milk/eggs? She is only 3 months old so probably not, unless she had an ana reaction.  How did you figure out it was milk/eggs?

I think it's very common to develop an allergy to soy.  My son was tested positive for milk/eggs/peanuts/sesame at 7 months and when we introduced soy at 12 months he reacted and at his next appointment he was positive for soy. So it was developed after his first RAST test.

Also, over 50% of kids that are allergic / intolerant to milk, also have issues with soy. So i would avoid for now just to see if she's better.

With your situation, i would (IMO) do the elimination diet to see what's causing it but that is ONLY if you can be ridiculously strict. and it seems like it's almost impossible if you eat out so often.

If she's been reacting to all the formulas (Neutramogen, alimentum, soy..), i would call the pedi for a perscription formula.  Some infants with a severe allergy will still react to Neutramogen/alimentum b/c there are traces of cows milk in them.. very small but they are there.

either way - call your doc and voice your concerns.  good luck!

  • I agree with magdusia 100%. I would also suggest putting your dc in an Epsom salt bath. It will gel remove the toxins created by the allergic reaction and ease the burden on the immune system.
  • I also agree with PP.  My daughter was positive to dairy at 3 months and negative to soy.  She even ate a few soy bottles with no reaction when I was out of town for work and she was 3-4 months old.  By five months, she needed an epi pen for soy.
