3rd Trimester

Weight gain for thin moms?

Hi,

I'm 26, 5'6" and my pre-pregnancy weight was 118. I am 29 weeks right now and have only gained 10 or 11 pounds. The baby is normal size & very active, my blood pressure is good, etc. I walk a lot and am active, but I don't formally exercise and I certainly don't diet - I eat healthy, and as much as I am hungry. Still, the internet says I should have gained 19-26 pounds by now. Have other thin moms gained so little by the start of third trimester?

Thanks!

Re: Weight gain for thin moms?

  • I was 135 pre-pregnancy, and I'm 5' 8".  I lost 15 lbs in the 1st tri because I was sick and cut out all sodas.  I am 37 weeks, I have gained back the 15 and 8 more.  My doctor is not concerned at all, they have never said one word to me about my weight.  I think as long as you and baby are healthy it's not a big deal.

  • I have not gained much at all (not sure the exact amount) and still fit into most of my pre-pregnancy clothes.  I am very active and eat very healthy and my MW is not concerned at all.  She says my LO is right on track :-)

  • I am 5'9" was 125lb and my MW advised me to gain some weight preconception, I gained about 7-10lbs so started out my pregnancy about 132 I have only gained about 16lbs. I did exercise through out the pregnancy (like my MW advised I was a very active runner before) up until about the end of my 8th month.  I agree if you are healthy and eating healthy keep on trucking.

  • each pregnancy is different.

Im 5'2 and was 100 pounds when I got pregnant with my first son at 39 weeks I had gained a total of 12 pounds and I gave birth to an extremely healthy little man.

This time around I started off at 100 pounds and I have gained 21 pounds at 31 weeks. I think a lot of it has to do with my appetite at the beginning.

  • Wow this makes me feel bad..

I was 92 lbs when I got pregnant and 5'2" (way to skinny, I just couldn't gain weight,,I tried) and now I am 30 weeks and weight 131!!!

  • I was 117 pre-pg and I'm up about 20lb now at 30w. However, I did (and do) exercise formally so I was quite lean before getting pregnant and I think I needed to gain some bodyfat for the pregnancy's sake (and breastfeeding). My doctor said my weight is spot on. I would just see what your care provider thinks. Everyone is different. I think lack of weight gain is mostly a concern when the mother is dieting/restricting or just not eating enough in general.

  • I'm up around 15-18 pounds. That's pretty normal IMO.

As for your weight gain... as long as your doctor/midwife are not worried, you do not need to worry either. Trust me... weight will start packing on before you know it. You might end up in the 20-25 pound range by the end. As long as you are eating right three times a day (plus a snack or two), then you ought not to worry.

  • I'm similar to you - 5'6" 116lbs prepregnancy. I've gained 20lbs so far, though.

Unless your doctor is concerned, there is no reason for you to be worried. It sounds like you are taking good care of yourself.

  • I was 5'11" 138 pounds pre-pregnancy and I gained most of my weight in the early third trimester. I'm now up 28 pounds, which is right in line with the recommendations, but I hadn't gained much by the end of the second trimester.

  • I was 130 lbs pre-pg (5'6") and had only gained 12 lbs at 30 weeks.  At 37 weeks, I was up 18 lbs.  I'm right on track to gain 20 lbs total, which is how much my OB wanted me to gain.
  • I'm very petite, always have been and this is/was a huge concern for me in both my pregnancies.

With DD1, I was 5'2 and about 100 lbs prepregnancy. I gained the very minimum 22 lbs that my Dr wanted me to gain. I tried so hard to gain more, but I just couldn't. DD1 grew just fine throughout the pregnancy, and I gave birth to a healthy 7 lb 8 oz baby.

This pregnancy, I started out a bit smaller (which I am/was disgusted about) and have only gained about 9 lbs so far. My Dr and I both wish it was more (personally, I wish I had gained about 20 lbs by now) but I'm doing everything I can to gain weight---eating constantly, adding extra calories (including a milkshake made with Boost that's almost 700 extra calories). So far, DD2 is growing right on track, but she's small--all the women in my family are tiny. I have another u/s at the end of the month to check on her growth again, but the MFM who reviewed my u/s said that I'm just not meant to have big babies.

My Dr would like me to gain more between each visit, but is satisfied if I gain anything. She doesn't freak out or lecture me because she knows that I'm trying, but it's still hard to deal with.

You, pre-pregnancy, was the same as I was this pregnancy. I've struggled for years to gain weight---talking with Drs, nutritionists, etc--and they've all said I'm healthy, just very petite.

I would LOVE to have your weight gain!! I struggled gaining 22 lbs with DD1 and it's even harder to gain weight this pregnancy!

  • Don't worry about it! I'm 5'4", started out at 115lbs, and I'm only up 15lbs now at 38 weeks. My doc is not concerned at all, baby is exactly the right size for its gestational age. FWIW, I had similar weight gains in my last two pregnancies, and delivered two babies that were both a bit early and both over 8lbs. Weight gain doesn't necessarily have to do with baby's size. I know plenty of girls that gained around 50lbs and had 6lb full term babies, for example.
  • I am 5'5'' and had gained 13 lbs as of 2 weeks ago. My MW isn't concerned and we are expecting a smaller baby by the growth ultrasounds. Try not to worry!
  • Up 17 lb. 5'4 130 pp

  • I'm 5'5" and was 118 pre-pregnancy. I'm 36weeks now and have gained roughly 22lbs total. I don't formaly exercise either and I pretty much eat whatever I'm hungry for. I do eat alot of fresh fruits but that's really about as healthy as it gets Embarrassed

  •  im 5'4 and weighed 118 before pregnancy at my last dr visit i had just gain right at ten pounds i also have a pretty active baby and im 29 weeks now and have a dr app tomoro.   also between month 2 and 3 i didnt gain any weight i was concerned and asked my dr he said as long as im eatin and drinkin then the weight gain will come, he said he would be just fine with me gaining 25-35 pounds for my whole pregnancy! so far im happy with my weight gain and my dr isnt concerned! i also think your doing great and if your dr aint concerned then you shouldnt be either :)
  • I'm 20, 5'2 and my pre-pregnancy weight was 92. I am 38 weeks and 2 days and I have gained 22 pounds. I had an ultrasound done Friday and the baby weighs 5 pounds 14 ounces. I do not exercise either, nor do i diet.....everyone is different, all the charts are different, I just go by what my doctor says bc he knows me!
  • I'm 23, 5'8"  and my pre-pregnancy weight was 103. I've gained 15 lbs, I'm 27 weeks, and like you I'm active (although probably not as active as you). If your doctor isn't worried I wouldn't be either. The only thing that I've changed about my diet is instead of waiting until I'm hungry to eat, I ask myself if I CAN eat every hour or two. If I can eat I eat, that way I make sure to eat several little things in the course of a day.
  • I weighed 120 when I got pregnant and only have gained 24 lbs. Dr says I'm still in good weight.

  • I weighted 118 pre pregnancy with a height of 5'4 so I wasn't really slim but I wasn't fat either.  I now weigh 165 which is about a 41lbs weight gain. Still I only look about 4 or a small 5llbs and I am 36wks.  I didn't need to weigh this much but my baby is measuring a little small so I gained to give her an extra boost of weight.  I want her to come out a healthy weight so she can come home with a day or two.  Good luck to you.

  • Well, I'm jealous because I'm 5'6" and weighed 113 pre-pg. I have gained 27lbs. I don't diet, I don't exercise, I eat healthy and I'm probably going to gain as much as did with DS - 32lbs... Only back then I was going to the gym at least 3 days a week until my due date. I was in great shape but it did not keep the weight gain away. I can't complain because I did get my body back, size 0 and all.

  • I started out 109 pounds at 5'3. I've gained about 12 pounds so far. Baby is looking great, so I don't worry about it.
