LClaire / babywearers...

Lillian, I'm not sure if you are around since I know that you just moved ...YAY!!  I hope everything is going well!.  I thought I'd post this in case you see it.

If anyone else reading this has thoughts/input, please respond too.

I'm starting to look into baby carriers again.  I've seen some online sales for Beco's recently.  Any thoughts on those?  Is there a concesus on which is preferred/better ... the Beco or Ergo?  Do you think it would be overkill to have a Beco and a Moby?   Should I start out with a Moby and go from there?

Thanks for any help!!

Re: LClaire / babywearers...

  • I'm planning to get a Moby for myself and then something more heavy duty (for a slightly bigger baby) for my DH to use.  I could use some recs too so I'm interested to see your responses.  I'm obviously no help though, haha.

  • I got a hotsling at my shower yesterday from a girlfriend that used one and loved it with her daughter. It isnt heavy duty but she raves about it all the time. My sister in law is also giving us her Baby Byorn to use.
  • I do not recommend the baby bjorn at all! ?Its horribly designed and terrible for your back. ?I have a Moby and i love it! ?Eli is even 19 pounds now and carrying him in the moby still feels good and no back pain. ?Most people say that the Moby is great for the first few months of life, then the ergo as they get older, past 9 months. ?I may get an ergo, but I am not sure yet. ?Its around $100 and the moby is like $40. ?Good luck! ?I love my moby!
  • I still love my moby, too.  I've used it quite a bit since Madeleine was born, and find it to be really comfy since you can adjust it to your liking.  She seems to like it, too, since she almost always falls asleep in it.  For $35, it's not a bad investment even if you only use it the first couple of months.  On the downside though, Dh will have nothing to do with it, and keeps asking for the Baby Bjiorn since he preferred that.
  • Thanks for your responses ladies!  Seems like the Moby is a good investment.

Jill, I was thinking the same thing ... I don't see Matt using the Moby but think he'll use a more structured carrier like the Bjorn/Beco/Ergo.  Maybe I'll invest in two carriers.

  • I have a question....we have a Moby and a simple Snugli carrier also.  I've gotten the basic Moby wraps down, but I still don't feel safe doing stuff around the house with Sophia in the Moby (or very comfortable).  Maybe it's just not for me?

Jill, what kind of things do you do around the house with Madeleine in the Moby?  How often do you use it?  I think I"ve only used the Moby 3 or 4 times since Sophia was born.

  • I sort of go back and forth on my thoughts on the Moby. I got it kind of later(when she was maybe 2 or 3 months?) and I have a feeling I'll use it a ton more this time around with a newborn. Once she started getting bigger, I didn't like having to adjust it constantly to keep it super tight because of the stretch in it. Plus, I'm just kind of too lazy a lot of the time to deal with wrapping when I can just throw something else on quickly, especially if we're out in public.  I know I've raved about it a ton, but I do love my Beco so so so much. I even have an older model, so it doesn't have the built in infant panel, and I love it tons. I haven't been using it lately, but only because it doesn't fit around my waist anymore, so I've been using a BabyHawk and I love that, too. Even though it doesn't have the buckles, it's super easy to get in and out of(actually, kind of easier than the Beco if I'm by myself, but not a huge difference), so I'll probably use that a lot with a newborn.

As far as Beco vs. Ergo - the Beco has the infant insert now, so lots of people love that. Otherwise, function is basically the same - I just love pretty prints, so that's what sold me on the Beco more than anything:) That's why I love my BabyHawk, too, I think - I love all of their option for fabrics and they're less expensive than a full price Beco. Sorry to throw another in the mix - I'm just loving the BH lately and it is a less expensive option and just as convenient as the other options:) If you want to try any of mine, you're more than welcome to(and that goes for anyone else reading this and curious about the different types!). I have no clue at all if there are any stores around here where you'd be able to go and try on a few different types, so if you want to try any of mine to see what feels good or what you just don't like in person, just let me know and we can figure something out!

  • oh - and I wouldn't call it overkill to have both a Moby and a Beco at all, but I might be slightly biased on that one since I have both;)
  • LClaire, Thanks for your response!  Hope you're getting settled in after your move.

So... between the Beco & Baby Hawk ... which one do you prefer?  Is one more comfortable than the other?  Does the Baby Hawk have clips like the Beco or does it tie?  Can you use the BH with an infant?  You mentioned that it is easier to use ... can you tell me how it feels easier?  Easier to get on?   I'm so new to these things and appreciate your thoughts.  A plus that the BH less expensive than the Beco (the Beco I'm looking at on sale is about $99).

  • Sara - I use my Moby a lot outside when I take Eloise out to play.  It's so nice to just strap Madeleine in and have my hands free to help Eloise on the swing set, or chase her around the yard.  It's been my lifesaver with two kids!  I take walks in it, too, since I think it keeps the baby a lot warmer than a stroller would.

It's kind of hard to pick one because it depends a lot on my mood on any given days:) I almost always reach for my Beco if I want something fast, but since it doesn't fit right now I reach for the BH more. You can definitely use the BH with an infant - here's a link to their different carry instructions. The infant carry is similar to others, but you tie the straps behind their back for more stability rather than underneath their legs. The BH doesn't have clips - it just ties, but I find them both to be similarly comfy. The Beco has more padding, especially in the waist.  As far as easy - I guess I mean in that I can just tie it to the length to I want the straps to be right away? With the Beco, I have to adjust the strap tightness after I do the clips to make sure everything is adjust to how I want it to fit. Neither of them is a ig deal at all though - doing a wrap is still a lot more complicated to me, but people who do wraps all of the time think they're no big deal at all, so it's kind of all relative:) Once you do any of the carriers a few times, it gets much easier. I think you said that you were unsure on the colors for the BH - I'd be willing to bet 99% that they can just do a solid color for you in any of the colors - it might even be cheaper since they wouldn't be adding extra fabric on the panel! I know you can get the Beco in plain black of brown and if you were looking at the Ergos, too, since they're so similar, you could always do one of those since they're the plain colors and more guy-friendly patterns:)
