Food Allergy

New to the board

Hi, I'm the mom of 1 year old twins, only one with an allergy so far. One of my little guys had a reaction to peanut butter and after a blood test we got the confirmation. So when the nurse called to give us the news I asked about tree nuts and was told to stay away from all nuts. Ok no problem. Then I asked about soy because isn't peanut a legume, which is more like a bean? She told me soy is a bean not a nut. No kidding! She didn't say anything about the Epi pen even tho I know the pedi said if we got a positive test we would need to get one. I'm trying to get an appt with an allergist but they are booked up right now.  All this just happened last week so I'm pretty new to all of this.

I'm looking for any advice for a newbe mom with a child w allergies. TIA

Re: New to the board

  • Like pp said, call in the AM and get a prescription for an epipen.  If they say no, find a new doc.

What exactly was he tested for? just peanuts? was he tested for soy?  Was he tested by his pedi or by an allergist?

A lot of people avoid tree nuts when there is a peanut allergy b/c it's much easier to avoid both.

If he was tested by a pedi, i would go to an allergist. And he should be tested for the top 8 (at least).  My son reacted to eggs and was tested for about 10 allergies, ended up being allergic to 5 of them which took us by surprise. .

btw - you are like the 4th mom of twins who has only one twin with allergies.

  • The pedi office actually called me the day after this post and gave me a list of allergists, we made an appt for later in the month. The pedi said that if we couldn't get in soon they would get us the Epi pen.

He was only tested for peanuts via blood test at the pedi office. I guess more will come from the allergist tho.

Thanks ladies I'm sure I will have more questions soon.
