Does this sound like excess lipase

Hi ladies

I've been EBF DD for 3 months and have started to leave her with my mom in order to take care of personal stuff and will hopefully start working again pretty soon. I have a small stash of milk in the freezer that I use for these instances.

The problem is that DD will not take the bottle. At first I thought it was b/c she just didn't like the bottle itself but we did sort of an experiment the past few days. First my mom would try to give her the bottle, she would take it, suck suck suck, scream!

Yesterday DH gave her a bottle and although she didn't really seem too in love with the idea, she took almos the whole bottle.

The difference: Mom's bottle was from the freezer stash, DH's bottle was pumped the night before and had been in the fridge only.

I tasted the milk and it does have a slight bitterness. I know it's not gone bad but it definitely doesn't taste the same as fresh milk.

Does this sound like excess lipase? If so, what's the process I have to follow in order to freeze it and keep the taste. I know I have to scald it, but as I do it right now, I pump, put in the fridge and make baggies to freeze once or twice a week depending on how much I have pumped. Do I have to scald it right away? Can I mix and scald together a couple day's worth?

 TIA for your help.

  • Lipase would be a metallic smell. Mine has a bit of it but DD doesn't mind thankfully.

  • I wouldn't jump right to excess lipase. I have it and the smell is very distinct. Excess lipase smells metallic or soapy.

Exactly. It's the smell of something basic (meaning ph level), like bleach, soap, etc. Not bitter.

ETA; For a bit my kid would only take the milk if it had a scoop of formula in it, not even fresh milk helped her take it. I found that only my first 2 months of milk was really off putting, the rest she can take straight.
