Girl and boy close in age?

Do any of you have a boy and a girl close in age?  How do they get along?  DD will be 20 months old when this LO is due, and a guess at our NT scan was that this LO is a boy...and I wonder what their interaction will be like.  I admit, I kind of wanted DD to have a little sister since they will be so close together, and now a little nervous about a boy.

Obviously, I'm more excited that baby is healthy than anything but I can't help but think about this, too!

  • My kids get along great! They couldn't love each other more and they play together very well. The only problem we ever have is DD trying to "mommy" DS a bit too much.

  • Awesome!  And thank you!  I was actually going to page you, and ask since I noticed your LO's age difference in the poll down the page.

That really puts my nerves at ease.  I know it probably seems like a silly thing to be nervous about but I couldnt' help but wonder.  Thank you again!

No problem! I'm sure we'll have issues along the way, but what siblings don't?

This is exactly how it is for us too, except my DS is older and tries to "mommy" my DD!

  • I have a boy/girl duo, and while they've just recently started to play together, they are very cute. DS is very nurturing and protective of his little sister, and DD is so in love with her big brother.

I think having one of each is nice. I get to experience having both a son and a daughter. Plus, I think opposite sex siblings would be a little bit less competitive than same sex pairs. Brother can watch out for his sister when they're high school aged as well. :)

We have the same situation: boy/girl, 16 months apart.  They fight sometimes, but mostly they adore each other.  Because of the way their birthdays worked out, ours will be two years apart in school, though, which I think will be nice.

  • mine are 18months apart. DS is the older one, he bosses her around a bit but not much-yet. She keeps up with him and hangs with the older kids ;) They love each other a lot, its very cute. I always wanted an older brother, so it's nice my daughter has one ;)

  • We have a boy and girl, 12 months apart.  They get along really well.  I like the fact that because of different genders, I do not think there will be as much competition/jealousy.

  • Thanks, ladies.  All your answers really helped.  I have an older brother but he is six years older than me (my sister is in between us; we're all 3 years apart), so I was really curious/anxious about it.  But your answers...whew!Big Smile

  • My son & daughter are 21 months apart. I was nervous at first cause I thought my son would be jealous and read horror stories about kids his age  acting out etc but that wasn't the case. Ds is a protective big brother and when she cries he runs over to whereever she is and tries to soothe her. He helps feed her and gives her the pacifer etc.

I totally agree!. My brother and I are still very close. I would be more nervous about having 2 girls lol. Fighting over clothes, competition with boys, hormones etc. I think a boy and girl totally balance each other out.

    I agree.

I have a boy/girl duo as well. They aren't old enough to play yet, but DS is definitely nurturing and protective. I actually want four children and I thought boy boy girl girl would be great for room sharing and hand me downs, but really I love DS & DD together and now couldn't have it any other way.

  • My DD is 20 months older then DS as well.  They get along great!  THey both love each other, love to try to get the other to laugh, it's wonderful.  They're just now starting to get into toy wars, so ask me again in a year ;)

I don't have 2 close in age yet... BUT... My DS is 10 months old and my niece is 5 months older... They get along great. They hug each other and give each other kisses... They DO manage to steal toys from one another but they're super good together!
