Baby Showers

fun games?

My FI mother is throwing me a baby shower, however she wants me to be in charge of games to play. In your experience what are some good games that really get the guests having fun and loosen up?

Re: fun games?

  • This is one of the few I find tolerable.....

    THE TIMER GAME

Want to keep guests interested while opening gifts? Set a timer every couple minutes. When the timer goes off, whoever gave the gift being opened gets a little prize, such as a candle or shower gel.

  • The timer game during gift opening is a good one (I like it better than "gift bingo").

You can walk around with a tray filled with baby related items...maybe about 20-25 and then walk out of the room.  Just tell the guests that they have to use their memories - nothing else.  You then walk out of the room.  Your mom will then ask them questions about YOU (what color were you shoes, did you have in earrings, how many pair, were you wearing rings, anything in your hair, was your hair up or down, what color was your top, etc.  People are so focused on what is on the tray they hardly pay attention to you.

Another really fun game that requires a bit of effort is the "Pair of Bloomers" game.  I saw it on here and tried it at a shower I hosted and it was a hoot - guests loved it and really loosened the place up a LOT.  You purchase a corsage made with just two flowers (pair of bloomers) and wrap it carefully with bubblewrap, etc. and put it in a box.  You wrap the box maybe 10-15 times with different colored/patterned tissue paper.  You use some music and while it is playing the guests pass it around to each other and when the music stops (obviously someone has to stop it...maybe after 15-20 seconds) the person holding the gift takes off one layer of tissue and the game continues.  It is like the "hot potato" game.  You continue until someone takes off the last piece of tissue paper and opens the box.  Before starting you must tell them that inside is a "Pair of Bloomers" and whoever opens them has to wear them for the rest of the shower.  I even went so far as to find a decorative box so the person taking off the last piece of tissue didn't know it was the last piece.  They are very surpirsed when they open the box and find a corsage in there.  I got a wrist corsage and also did it at the beginning of the shower - great ice breaker and they got to wear it the whole shower.  Most of the people at the shower I hosted knew what "bloomers" are or if some didn't other older guests told them.  LOL  What a surprise they got.  I can't wait to try it again at another shower.

A really easy game is to fill a baby bottle with M&M or colored Goldfish crackers and ask guests to guess how many are in the bottle without going over.  You would have to supply pieces of paper and something to write with.

Note:  A good prize are scratch off lottery tickets - guests love them!

  • I'm planning a shower too.  Someone suggested The Price is Right.  You pass around various baby items and guests have to guess how much they cost.  Whoever gets the closest guess, gets a point.  The person with the most points at the end wins.  I'm going to use about 8 baby items for the game.  Also, the MTB keeps all the items.

  • I would have to go with the timer game or the unwrap-the-gift-and-play-bingo-game.  I like the timer game because, as a guest, I don't have to do anything.  And the bingo game isn't too annoying.  Especially if you use M&M candy as the bingo chips.  Then I can just eat my chips.  I guess I just don't think that grown adults need games to loosen up and have fun.  We all have interesting things going on in our lives.  We can sit and chat with each other, catch up or meet new people.  We can eat a little lunch.  If you want to get grown women to loosen up and have fun....mimosas!  There was one shower I went to that had a bottle full of jelly beans and you had to guess how many were in it.  That was fine.

I just reread my post and realized that I sound like a Debbie Downer.  I don't mean to sound mean I just know that myself, and many others, don't want to play games so the kind done at your seat would probably be best.

  • My favorite game is the price is right but we do it as an ice breaker.  Make a nice display of baby items and have guess sheets (remember they must guess without going over) and a box to drop your guess in.  This way people can mingle and play the games as they arrive.

Another that I just played recently I loved was taking random baby items and wrapping and numbering them.  We passed the gifts around and had to guess what the item was.  After everyone guessed the MTB opened the little gifts and we got to see if we were right.  They wrapped things from bottles to books.

These can both be a little pricey but if you are patient and shop the sales and dollar bins you can find great deals.  Or you can make all the little gifts part of your gift to the MTB.  But the biggest benefit that I can see is that your guests can still talk and have fun while participating.  Some of the games require your concentration and you don't get to visit with everyone.

  • I hate shower games, but this one was a blast at my last shower. Everyone gets a safety pin to pin on their shirt. If you catch someone saying the word "baby" you get to take their pin(s). Whoever has the most pins at the end of the shower wins!
