weaning down to 3 bottles

Today the dr said i can drop the 10am bottle since they aren't drinking but 3oz of it. They have 6.5 oz in the am, 6 at 10, 6.5oz at 3 and 7.5 before bed. They aren't drinking all of any of the bottles. The one before bed is a struggle since we started finger foods because they take sooooo long to eat now and i don't start until 5:30 some nights because that's when i get home. They are done around 6:15 then i'm trying to give them a bottle at 7ish. Not happening... so should i increase the other bottles after i drop the 10am one or would you just offer them 3oz at 10am and not drop it. Right now i'd say they are actually drinking about 19oz out of the 26.5 oz offered.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Would you drop it or leave it and just give them the 3oz?? If you drop would you give them water or anything???

Thanks!!

Re: weaning down to 3 bottles

  • You might be over-thinking these 3oz a bit. Wink

At 10 months, they'll eat/drink if they're hungry/thirsty and stop if they're full.  They're also starting to learn to listen to their body cues, so it's important not to force them to eat if they don't want to.

I'd eliminate the 10 bottle.  You may want to keep a sippy of water around and offer it to them while they're playing, just in case they get thirsty.  You know their hungry cues, they'll let you know if they're starving.

If the night bottle is important to the bedtime routine, I'd keep that.  Up to you though.

Babies are great about getting as much as they need so long as it's offered to them.  Even if they don't drink a ton one day, they'll even it out eventually.  Just keep offering milk/water/finger foods.  They'll take what they need.

    Good luck!

  • We do 3 bottles now b/c my kids weren't hungry for 4 either. It was easy for me to drop the 4th feed b/c if my DS2 is not hungry he screams bloody murder at the sight of a bottle. Tongue Tied So it was obvious when I had to drop to 3. I asked my pedi what an appropriate oz per day was so that's what I shoot for and I don't worry about getting a certain amount at each feeding anymore. 19oz per day seems good to me (but of course go w/ what your Pedi says). Your kids will drink what they need to drink and will likely up their intake at the 3 feeds on their own to be at or near 19oz with 3 feeds. My kids vary their intake/day a lot so I just try to make sure they meet my Pedi's recommended minimum. Today DS1 drank about 24oz which was way higher than yesterday. DS1 did like 16 or 17. Tomorrow will probably be the opposite. I expect them to drop their oz/day as we get closer to 1 yr old.

We do 1 morning bottle, 1 before lunch and 1 at bedtime. I offer a sippy of water at dinner but they don't care for water yet. They don't seem thirsty at other times, even at dinner. I feel your pain with dinner being so close to bedtime and I've been thinking of doing a bottle first and dinner close to bedtime. But then they'll be super messy and we might not have time for a bath. So I don't know. But since they'll be ok with 12-16oz by a year old I might just eliminate the bedtime bottle and do an am bottle + lunch time bottle, then sippies of water the rest of the day. Ok I'm rambling now so I'll stop. : )

  • We just switched the boys from 4 bottles to 3 a couple of wks ago. The feeding we cut was the 4pm bottle, which we replaced with yogart.  Maybe you can do the same?

Our current schedule looks like this:

AM - bottle, followed by cereal with milk and fruit an hr later

Noon - veggie and fruit, followed by bottled an hr later

4pm - snack (usually a yogart, but can include applesauce, fruit, granola bar)

    7 PM - dinner

9 PM - bottle (dreamfeed - I know, bad, but works for us)

  • About 1-2 weeks ago we dropped the girls 3pm bottle.  They used to get 7oz at 7am, 11am, 3pm, and 6:30pm.  Now they just get the 7oz at 7am, 11am, and 630pm and even then they are really only drinking 6oz.  We give them breakfast t 7am and then they get the bottle, same thing with lunch at 11am, and then dinner at 5:30pm.  We do give them a snack at 3pm (following the daycare schedule).. they usually get fruit, veggies, and a yogurt at that time.
