Food Allergy

GF and breastfeeding?

Hi ladies- first post on this board! I am gluten-moderated (not entirely GF) for a gluten allergy but not full-blown celiac.  I was new to the diet (only about 6-8 months in) when I got pregnant, and strangely the allergy went away during pregnancy.  I was no longer reacting to gluten and my dr. was fine with me returning to a "regular" diet.  However, I started reacting again about 3 weeks ago, worse than before.  I am just about 31 weeks pregnant and back on a gluten moderated diet.

My question is-  How does a gluten allergy in the mother affect the LO? Can I pass it on to him/her?  Can it affect LO if I want to BF? I've done some research online but I'm getting mixed answers.  Some say that it does not affect baby and BF is fine.  Others say that it could increase baby's chances of developing the allergy, too.  I plan to ask my OB at my next appt but I thought some of you more experienced allergy mamas could point me in the right direction.

Thanks!

  • Parental allergies don't typically pass to the LO and it will only affect them during BF if they have an allergy to something that you're eating.

  • The reason you're getting mixed answers is because the research is mixed :)  Some theories are that the mother passes what she is/isn't eating onto the baby and creates/prevents allergies that way.  That theory doesn't always hold true since there are lots of cases reg. twins and only one has allergies.  Some theories say nothing you are eating effects the baby in utero.

The only consistent conclusion I've found in what research I've done is that if mom or dad has a food allergy/intollerence the chances are greater that the baby will too.

  • How do you know you are not Celiac?  Have you had an upper endoscopy?  If you think there is even a remote chance you are Celiac, I'd go 100% GF right away.  Then, after LO is here get tested.

Any sort of allergic reaction isn't ideal during pregnancy, since it at a minimum affects your immune system, etc.
