How do you mix your powder formula?

It's getting annoying.  When I shake it per the instructions on every formula container I've seen, it gets SO foamy.  Even when I mix it ahead of time and let it sit in the fridge there's still a fair amount of foam on top a few hours later.  When I try to stir it, I get lumps.

We use Similac, for what it's worth.  Anyone have any great ideas for how to mix formula without all the bubbles?

Re: How do you mix your powder formula?

  • We had this problem when we were using neosure. It helped if we mixed up a big batch and then poured it into the bottles. A lot of the foam would stay in the big container if we poured slow.

It didn't solve the problem but it helped. Good Luck!

  • I do a large mix up, using a Blender Bottle that I got at BBB.  I'll do 25 oz at a time for example, and then I make all the bottles at once.  She drinks 25 oz in 24 hours so it works out really well. When I do this, the bottles sit there so no bubbles when I go to feed her.

Also, I hated Similac/Enfamil for a few reasons and one was the foam. I use Good Start and don't have as many issues.

  • My husband is a pro at mixing bottles without any bubbles or clumps. But he takes FOREVER to do it, and I don't have that kind of patience.  I mix every bottle individually: measure water, add formula, and then shake like crazy.  To settle the foam I then swirl it around a few times and then give it a knock on the table.  It's not perfect and not fool-proof, but that's my method.

I know people who have had great success with the Dr. Brown's formula mixing pitcher.  But I don't want to make it up in advance and refrigerate, so I stick with my method.

  • As PPs have mentioned, using a pitcher to premix your formula works well.

We use Mylicon drops, or the Walmart equivalant (way more affordable). We just add 3 drops per 6-8 oz bottle, or 2 drops for a 2-4 ox bottle. It helps dramatically.

  • Thanks for all the ideas!  We use gas drops sometimes, too, so I'll have to try that.

Mixing a big batch in advance is a good idea, too.  Guess I should get a dedicated bottle to use.

  • Like PPs, we mix a large batch at once. I got a plastic pitcher with a screw-on lid from Dollar Tree to use, and it has been awesome. I shake it all up and after a couple hours, no bubbles. If I need to pour a bottle and there are still bubbles in the pitcher, I just pour carefully and can usually avoid them getting into the bottle.

We use a generic version of Enfamil.

  • i use Enfamil and just measure out the water add the formula and shake it like crazy! there doesnt seem to be much foam after a couple of seconds. It may just be the kind of formula you use.
  • We have to use gas drops with every bottle so I put the drops in the water and then add the formula and shake. The drops help a lot with the foam/bubbles!

  • We also mix a large pitcher (26 ounces). We use the Dr. Brown's Mixing Pitcher.  It's suppose to allow less air into the formula.  I think it helps!  The little bit of foam that's in there usually dissolves by the time we go to feed her the bottles.  We also use Similac.

  • I use the Dr. Brown's formula pitcher.  I have to make 12 bottles a day, so I make them all up the night before.

same here. especially if you wait about 5 mins, or bump on a table like a pp mentioned. We've never had an issue.

  • Gas drops in the bottle. I always shake it up. Once I'm done shaking I put the gas drops in and swirl it around. You will actually see the bubbles disapate.

  • We use the Dr. Browns pitcher for my little girl's bottles and it's a lifesaver now that we have to add rice cereal to her bottles as well.

  • We were making up the bottles one by one before I remembered that I had a Dr. Browns pitcher. It's a game changer, it makes life SOOOO much easier.

It helps control the foam (we also use Similac) and it's nice to just have it ready to go. Esp. at night.
