I have been to 3 funeral showing and a wedding in the past 2 months and I have noticed shorts, flip flops and wife beaters there. Same thing for church.
I *hate* dressing up too, but weddings, funerals, church-- I'd at least wear nice jeans, shirt (not a t-shirt) and shoes. The stuff you said is saved for lawn mowing days or walmart shopping
Call me old fashioned but I think we lack common sense regarding formal things such as weddings, funerals, church, etc...On the other hand, I think showing up is what really counts.
My DH and I talk about this often. We went out to dinner Saturday night and I was amazed at how poorly dressed most of the people were - stuff I wouldn't even go to Target in. And this was NOT an inexpensive or chain restaurant. Not fine dining either, but I would have expected more.
It bugs me when people dress inappropriately anywhere, especially church. I always wear a skirt to church.
I was watching "Catch Me If You Can" a while ago and it was funny to remember that people used to dress up in suits and dresses for airline travel. Now it's hard to tell if people even bothered getting dressed before heading to the airport.

YES!! We were just talking about it recently. We flew into NYC for a Sat. night show on Broadway and were shocked at how people were dressed!! Torn jeans etc. it was sad. And I'll be the first to say, I too actually don't really like dressing up but there's certain times that that's just what you do, like it or not! Funerals are one of them!!
That drives me crazy! I think there is definitely a time and a place for casual wear, but weddings/funerals/church isn't it. Of course, I have a hard leaving the house if I'm not "put" together, so it kind of boggles my mind how people can't just put out the effort for the occasion. I'll admit, seeing people wears jeans to church is one of my biggest peeves, but maybe that's because I was brought up that church was when your wore your "Sunday best". Times are changing a guess, but not for the better imo.

Yes, and it drives me nuts. I think there is a time and place for everything. Remember when the team from Northwestern (I think it was their soccer team) went to the White House in flip-flops? I am also noticing that more people are coming out with their hair in curlers, sleep bonnets, etc. WTH?
Yeah, and it drives me nuts. But I love dressing up and for me personally, I just don't feel as good about myself when i'm schlepping it around in dirty ugly clothes.
Yes. It's very annoying to me. When I worked, I was shocked at what people would wear to the office.
It's really hard for me to get a hold on casual wear at church (whether it's for regular service, funerals or weddings). I dress up on Sundays and my neighbor (whose H is a pastor there) keeps telling me jeans are fine, but I have a hard time wearing them. I can deal with other people wearing decent jeans, but I just can't get on board with the girls that wear cut off booty shorts to church or the guys who wear sleeveless T-shirts.
mamarzzi-okay that pic of your DD in the chair is adorable..I have to get one of those petticoat romper things for this new baby I am having..
My niece wears her pj bottoms everywhere, it irritates the sh!t out of me..And as someone mentioned-airplanes, it's funny what people wear now, if you are going on a 2 hour flight they have to be all comfy in their yoga pants-like it is a 17 hour journey..I guess I am just old..

I haven't noticed it at funerals or weddings, but have at fancier restaurants. I see jeans there all the time. I mean, they're nice jeans, but still. There's a time and a place ...
DH and I get irritated by that as well! I love to dress up but I still think that people should make the effort when the time and the place calls for it.
I was watching "Catch Me If You Can" a while ago and it was funny to remember that people used to dress up in suits and dresses for airline travel. Now it's hard to tell if people even bothered getting dressed before heading to the airport.
Not a good example, because I would go through the airport in my bathing suit nowadays just to avoid the crap that goes on at security.
I do think people don't use common sense at some special occasions.
On the other hand, I went to a family fun night at the waterpark at our gym on Fri and couldn't believe most of the women were in skimpy dresses, full makeup, heels and accessories (I felt out of place waddling around pg in my swimsuit chasing my boys all around). Sometimes I am astounded by the occasions some women around here use to overdress and parade around-- family fun night at the fitness center waterpark, not what I expected.
Fortunate to be a SAHM to my 3 musketeers (5/2006, 5/2010 & 12/2011).
Soy & dairy free for the 3rd and final time.
I hate dressing up. I actually try to get out of calling hours because I hate it so much. But I wouldn't be caught dead in denim at a wedding, funeral, calling hours or church.
I have let my kids wear jeans to church with Grandma. I pack their play clothes when going to MIL's because she ruins any clothes I send.
Yes, I have noticed it in court too. In fact, I saw a girl in handcuffs in the courtroom wearing a skin-tight shirt with the logo "bad girl." Really? To your court appearance?
I do not dress up to go grocery shopping, to the park, walmart, hell, even work sometimes.
However, that being said. It is SO common around here to go to weddings and people are in jeans. Sure, I understand that a good pair of wranglers or cinch jeans ARE dressing up for farmers/cowboys, but in no way is it acceptable for women!
So, nesties, when you come to my wedding, please be aware of this 'status quo' of weddings. The peen knows how much this drives me crazy!!
The Catholic churches I've been to have always been casual. You see a lot of jeans and Packer jerseys during football season. I see a lot of shorts and tees during the summer. However, I have noticed some short shorts that are definitely more beach appropriate than church appropriate.
Funerals and weddings should be dressy occasions. They just should be. It's common sense.
