Sigh. 15 weeks and still hating baths

I'm working from home today and DH is upstairs giving DS a bath.  The poor little guy is 15 weeks old today and *still* hates baths.  We used to only give him one a week because it was so unpleasant but now that he's a drool monster and so spit-uppy all the time, we're doing it about every 2 days or so.  The increased frequency has done nothing to increase his comfort.  Poor guy is still so miserable and DH had to put earplugs in to finish the bath.

I really hope DS's water issues get better.  I would really like to take him to waterbabies classes in a few months.

Anyone else have a baby who still hates baths?  I read all of these posts about babies getting baths before bed because it calms them down to the point of drowsiness and I just can't wrap my head around it. :)

  • Are you using a bath thermometer? I have to make sure DS's baths aren't too cold (or obviously too hot over 100 degrees) or he hates them. I read a trick on here from someone else and it worked great. Wrap one of the thin baby towels around them after they're naked and before you put them in the tub. Then uncover a leg and wash it then cover it back up, then the arms, etc. I also run the hot water for a bit before we bring him in there to make it warm and keep the water running the whole time for white noise. He used to scream bloody murder and actually smiles now.

  • DD use to hate her bath when I used the little duckie to tell me when the water was too 'hot'.  Ha ha.  It's way too sensitive and the water would barely be luke warm.  However, I was the first time mom and paranoid.  I quickly got rid of that duckie and use my best judgement.  She likes them a little on the warmer side and LOVES her baths now.

We also have one of the 'frogs' that you get wet and lay over their body so they don't get cold in the bath.  This helped a lot too.  They have them at BRU/Target.

I'm not sure what the duckie is, but this is the turtle I use that gives a temp. I personally SUCK at judging water temp. The water I thought was "nice and warm" was 102 degrees. woops

  • are you still using a infant bath sling thing in your LO's tub?  My little girl absolutly hated her baths untill I took the sling out.  I don't know if she likes being deeper down in the water or what, but now she LOVES bath time!

  • Thanks, girls.  DH took the sling out for this most recent bath to see if it helped and DS still hated it.  I think? the water is warm enough.  We don't take the temp but it's warmer than luke warm.  Maybe I'm wrong about the temp, though.  I'll see if DH wants to get a thermometer.  We have a tummy wash cloth that sometimes helps, sometimes doesn't, but never guarantees that DS won't scream anyway.

  • My 16 wk old still hates the bath too.

It's a bit better when the water is warmer, but it's still hit or miss.  My first son LOVED his bath and we have so many pics of him so happy in the water.  All we have of DS2 is screaming pics. ;(

  • When are you bathing in relation to feeding?  Before feeding?  After feeding?

I usually like to bath before feeding so that the bath doesn't *wake* her up more right before bed but the past few times she was miserable.  Most recently, I fed her 1st then bathed and she was perfectly content.  I think the other times when she was miserable, she was just really hungry and wasn't really into bath time.
