We have been searching for houses for about 6 months now and we finally found one that we like. However it is in Gold Bar. Anyone know anything about the town? The three times we have been there it doesn't seem to bad. We are just trying to decide if the drive is something that would be worth it...
Re: Gold Bar?
are you already from the area? where do you work? goldbar is pretty far away from "the city" and the commute can be really bad. i haven't personally done it myself, but i've heard that highway 2 (near monroe) is very-very bad during rush hour.
from an "i don't live in gold bar" perspective.....gold bar is a small town with not a lot going on...it's cute..but it's too small-town for me. i'm sure it's possible, but personally, i wouldn't do it.
However, Gold Bar is nice. It is small (as you know), but if you like the small town feel I think it would be a great match. I don't think crime is too high in the area, and it isn't know for drugs like it's neighbor Granite Falls.
If it is really important to you, I would do it. But definitely think about your commute.
What about the schools up there? I dont' know much but I spent a lot of time in Skykomish and the school there is pretty sad and lacking. Gold Bar seems about that same type of town, so I'd really question the school system to see if its acceptable. It's way too middle of nowhere to me, but if you like a really small town that might be ok for you.
i don't know what school it would be up there..but i had a friend who transferred to snohomish highschool (she lived really close to goldbar)..... she said half the girls dropped out because they were pregnant....this was 2003, so i don't know if it still applies now.
we have a house in Monroe , and lived there for 3 1/2 years before moving to Eastern Wa. We loved living in Monroe.
The great things about Monroe (and the areas around Sultan, Gold Bar, Startup etc) is it is so pretty up there and I loved getting away from the hustle and bustle of Bellevue, Seattle etc, and the small town felling but still being able to get to city stuff in 30-60 mins depending on traffic.
The bad thing was the commute we worked in Bellevue and on a good day commute time was 35 mins on a bad day 1 1/2 -2 hours. I hated the commute.
However if you had a non- M-F 8-5 job it could be workable,.
As far as the schools you can check out greatschools.org and find out. I know that Monroe schools were not good so we were going to get our kids in the snohomish schools if we had not had moved
Gold Bar is in the middle of nowhere...and the hwy is a nightmare almost every day of the week. If one (or both) of you has to commute, it would add several hours to your day. If you worked from home and wanted to be in the middle of nowhere, it would be an option.
My SIL lives there now - she hates it.
Thanks everyone for some input.
DH works in Everett and now he goes in at 4, but soon he will be switching shifts. We decided to let it sit since it didn't have the qualifications for our loan and we would have to work it into the agreement. We found one in Snohomish we are supposed to look at Saturday so hopefully it all works out, we want out of this apartment and in a better neighborhood!
If you can afford Snohomish then I'd get a house there instead. Highway 2 can get brutal on the commute.
Until a few weeks ago I lived in Sultan and now I'm in Monroe. Even cutting down that 10 miles of traffic has been heaven on our commute! Things get nasty with campers on the weekends in the summer and skiiers in the winter.
My sister is in Goldbar -- not a lot to do and you pretty much have to come into Monroe for decent groceries (or shop at a small expensive local place). I think they have 2 places to eat out and 1 pizza delivery spot so options are limited and you'll end up in Monroe for a lot of things.
