3rd Trimester

What comes first?

Ok ladies, I havent even thought of this question until my boss asked me what comes first (she is 3 weeks behind me) so I wanted to know what you all are educated on.

Do you get contractions first and then your water breaks?

Or can your water break with no contractions?

It's silly that neither of us know the answer to this question Im sure some of you may think, but hey isn't that what the bump is for? to ask questions :)

Thanks in advance!

  • it can happen either way.  i work with 2 women who's water broke with zero contractions starting on their own.  they got to the hospital and ended up with pitocin to get constractions started.

my sister on the other hand, had all 4 kids and had to have her water broken at the hospital each time.  she was in labor, full contractions, but her water never broke on it's own.

  • Like PP said, it can happen either way. You can also deliver a baby that is fully inclosed in the sack of waters and never have it break. It is not necessary to break the waters inorder to deliver, especially if you are already in full labor.

  • I had no contractions. Woke up because my water broke. Then contractions started like a mofo and dd was born 2 hours later.

  • In a word Yes to both questions. My first cousin's water broke then she had contractions. I had contractions first. BTW your water does not always break. In fact my water has never broken, my doctor had to do it each time. I was ready to push with my third son when the doctor broke it to deliver him.

  • It's different for everyone.  The majority of women do not experience their water breaking "naturally" and have it done at the hospital.  Personally, I started having steady (but mild) contractions the morning of my EDD.  My water later broke that night at 11pm, and the contractions started coming closer together and were more intense.

  • Waters usually aren't supposed to break for labor, so contractions generally start first :P

  • Like the PP said, it can happen either way.  Contractions can cause your water to eventually break, or it can break on it's own.
