Dr. Hickman-RE?

So I've gotten all of our initial IF testing done through my OB/GYN office (Dr. Bobo), and she wants me to see an RE.  She gave me a slip for a free consult with Dr. Hickman, and I was wondering if it was worth it or should I go to someone else?  I know Dr. Roach comes highly recommended and she is in my area of town.

FWIW, we have no IF coverage beyond diagnostics as far as I can tell, so we are mostly going to be OOP.  Right now all of my blood tests and HSG have been normal, but I have a late ovulation and short LP.  We are awaiting the results of DH's SA.

TIA.

Re: Dr. Hickman-RE?

  • I saw Dr. Hickman for some diagnositics (although no treatment cycles) as well at Dr. Roach for IVF.  Hickman was very very knowledgeable and very thorough.  Their success rates are great.  But they are also really pricey.

Dr. Roach was fantastic - also very knowledgeable and thorough.  Her office staff was wonderful.  I've never received better personalized care than with Dr. Roach.  She was A LOT less expensive (at least for IVF) than Dr. Hickman and at the time her success rates were actually better.  However, her 2010 success rates fell dramatically, so I'm not sure what's going on there.  I would definitely ask her about it if you were to meet with her.

I don't think you can really go wrong with either, though.  I hope you find a quick and easy fix with a doctor you love.

  • My current RE suggested/recommended that I go see Hickman for a 2nd opinion and I just had my appointment with him as well.  My current RE did his residency so something with him and said that he has the best lab in Houston.

He is more expensive but after 2 failed IVF cycles this is our last attempt.  I am 99% sure we are going to do our last cycle with Hickman.  He has a good success rate for women with AMA and previous failures.

It is such a hard decision to make, I have been told that the lab makes all the difference so I am hoping that is the case and we have success!!

    Good luck...

  • I've heard good things about Dr Hickman.

I saw Dr Gill at HFI based on the recommendation of my old OB (he sent his daughter to him, which was good enough for me!)  I don't remember how much the consult was, but we were completely OOP for everything, even diagnostics. They worked with us a lot for payment and creative coverage though (their clinic was out of network for my hysteroscopy... but they never charged us the several thousand my insurance claimed we owed them.)

I don't have any experience with Dr. Hickman, but I did see Dr. Roach. I also ovulate late and have a short LP. Luckily the way she coded all of my exams, nothing about infertility was in my chart so insurance covered my treatment. The way she explained it was that all of the issues I was having are issues whether or not you are trying to conceive, which is definitely true because I am still dealing with them a year and a half after my son was born.

I did pay for the Rxs out-of-pocket, but the only expensive one was the HcG shot ($100 I think). I was lucky enough to get pregnant on my 3rd attempt after starting with Dr. Roach.

I hope you have great success where ever you go.

  • I saw Dr. McKenzie at Houston IVF (same office as Hickman).  I LOVED McKenzie.  I saw Hickman a few times and he was good but not as much personality IMO as McKenzie.  They were pretty convenient to me since I live in Katy.  The office is state of the art and I really liked the nursing staff and the lady who did my blood draws (CJ) and there were LOTS of them.  I had a successful IVF the first time, but did a few IUI cycles prior to IVF that were failures.  I had done several Clomid cycles before that also that did not work, but that was with my ob/gyn.

I did not have IF coverage either.  It was expensive but I don't know how it compared to other offices.  I would highly recommend the practice and their statistics are some of the best in the nation.

     Good luck to you!

I didn't see Dr Hickman, but Dr McKenzie, who is also at Houston IVF.  We ended up not needing to go all the way through to IVF so I can't speak to that.  But the staff there, nurses, phlebotomists, u/s techs, are all wonderful and they were very flexible with fitting me in for early morning visits as I work near Reliant Stadium.

  • Thank you for the responses.  It looks like we are temporarily on hold for now.  The results of DH's SA came in, and while they said the count and motility was good, we've got some issues with morph.  I've made an appointment with a Urologist for later in the month, and then we'll see where to go from there.
