Matilda or Mathilde... which do you prefer?

Which spelling do you prefer?

Personally, I prefer the French spelling because my first name is Michelle. I am not so much a fan of the French pronunciation. Mainly because my family still argues over how to pronounce Michelle - (Mi or Me).

But I do love the Mathilde spelling. Just wondering if the more popular version wouldn't be easier for a child to handle.

MATILDA

Gender: Feminine

Usage: English, Swedish, Finnish, Slovak

Pronounced: m?-TIL-d? (English) [key]

From the Germanic name Mahthildis meaning "strength in battle", from the elements maht "might, strength" and hild "battle". Saint Matilda was the wife of the 10th-century German king Henry I the Fowler. The name was brought to England by the Normans, being borne by the wife of William the Conqueror himself. It was popular until the 15th century in England, usually in the vernacular form Maud. Both forms were revived by the 19th century. This name appears in the popular Australian folk song 'Waltzing Matilda', written in 1895.

MATHILDE

Gender: Feminine

Usage: French, German, Dutch, Norwegian, Danish

Pronounced: ma-TEELD (French), mah:-TIL-d? (Dutch)

Cognate of MATILDA

  • You know, I actually really prefer Mathilde. :) I also love the meaning of the name. Either spelling is great, but a nice choice overall.

  • My grandmother's sister was named Marie Matilde, which she pronounced Mah-Teal.  I am partial to that spelling and pronunciation.  But of your options, I prefer Mathilde, though I would still tend to pronounce it Mah-Teal.

  • This is a tough question for me, because I love them both.

I think for you, I would choose Matilda, since you specifically don't want to hear the ma-TEELD pronunciation. Not that a lot of people will assume that pronunciation, but those that do, will obviously bother you. And I'm guessing the people who assume the pronunciation MATH-ill-dee will bother you more. • I prefer Matilda.

  • I agree that Mathilde looks prettier. I like it.

But I do think Matilda would be the more "livable" spelling.

Both are completely legit, though, so do what you want. I think Mathilde is lovely. And I like it the more I picture it embroidered on blankets and printed on a birth announcement. :)

  • The first spelling will be much easier for her in the long run. I have a very simple first name, but an unconventional spelling. People always comment on how lovely and unique the spelling is, but I have had to spell out my name my entire life. It wss the biggest factor in picking our girl name. Simple and most common spelling for Claire.

  • I prefer the spelling Mathilde pronounced like Matilda, but I see how this has the potential to be terribly confusing.

  • I love this name so much!  I slightly prefer the Matilda way just to avoid any mispronounciations..
  • 50/50 that we're using this name (still can't decide between two finalists). We'd go with Matilda. It's a Swedish (in addition to English) name spelled like that, and I want to have a shout-out to my heritage. Mathilda is also valid in Swedish, but I think it'd just be confusing for her having that spelling-- everyone would pronounce the th-sound.  Mathilde looks very pretty-- probably pretty than Matilda-- but you'd have to be totally prepared for people constantly mispronouncing it, and I think that the nuisance of having to correct people all the time would override the prettiness factor in this particular case, unless you have French heritage that you want to honor.
  • Matilda!!! Old fashion but better off then Mathilde...smh..
  • I love both, but I'd use Matilda unless I wanted the French pronunciation (which is how i pronounce Mathilde).

Compliments on picking this name, my little sister is Matilda, and I think it is the most beautiful name ever! I would have loved to call my little girl that...
Matilda is much easier to spell, and it looks more delicate...IMO
