Food Allergy

rast came up negative for all allergens - accurate?

I understand the the rast can produce both false positives and negatives, but would it be accurate if everything tested for comes up negative?

I thought my lo had a peanut allergy, due to breathing issues, but they have occured since then so I suspected another allergen, now thatt he test came back negative and the issues never seem directly linked to any foods, I am suspecting it might not be food related.

  • Did they test for environmental allergens too?  Several environmental allergens are especially high this time of year.  My DS is allergic to mold and it has been irritating his airways for the last month or so.

that was my first thought.. breathing issues can totally be due to any environmental allergies.  Do you have animals?  I would make his room hyperallergenic (sheets, no rug) and see how he does.

  • The morning after I gave DD sweet potatoes for the first time at 5 months old (her first time having solids), she woke up COVERED in hives.  They were huge from the top of her head to her toes.  She would also get big red welts wherever she was touched. Obviously, I assumed she was allergic to sweet potatoes.  This continued for 6 weeks.  I didn't know whether to introduce new solids, just nurse her, etc.  She was covered in hives every.single.day.  It was awful. Took her to two allergists and she tested negative to the top 8.  Both drs were not sure what was causing it - but I was pretty convinced it was food related since it started THE morning after giving solids for the first time.

Anyway, long story short...it wasn't food...it was the new fleece flame retardant pajamas that she had been sleeping in every night.  I didn't realize it, but she started sleeping in them at the same time I started giving solids.  As soon as I put her in organic, non-flame retardant pjs..it all went away.  So, my point is - look around, think about other things that could be causing LO's reaction. It is probably something else.

I do think DD is allergic to macadamia nuts, because she broke out in hives after eating them a couple of months ago - but so far, that's the only food allergy I *think* we are dealing with.

    Good luck!
