Non-clicky poll: songs for baby

Does anyone have any special songs they like to sing to LO, or songs you plan on singing to them?  I was reading this week, and it also came up in our childbirth class, that at this point you can play or sing certain songs for them, and they may recognize it after they're born, and feel calmed/soothed by it.  Don't know if it's true, but it can't hurt, plus it's kind of sweet to have our own special songs.

Mine are "To Make You Feel My Love" by Garth Brooks, "You've Got A Friend" by James Taylor, and "My Favorite Things" from The Sound of Music.

Re: Non-clicky poll: songs for baby

  • I find I actually sing really sad but beautiful songs to Sweet William (and have been for a while, cuz I'm a nerd)

-You Are My Sunshine (as performed by The Civil Wars. YouTube it! I seriously get misty...)

-Turtle Dove, which is an old English folksong

    -Green Grass by Tom Waits

  • We've been singing "You are my sunshine" to her when she is active. I only know the chorus, so I just repeat it over and over. One of my coworkers recommended doing this because it will help calm her after she is born. No idea if it's true, but I thought it was cute, so I'm trying it.

It's not all sweet when you look at the lyrics but "Hallelujah" by Imogen Heap.

I also have a song that I made up with Jr and sang it revised to N. I will use it again with Chloe. Plus I find most Christian kids music soothes them well.

Is that the same Hallelujah song that was in Shrek?  I think Rufus Wainright sang it for the Shrek soundtrack, but I love Imogen Heap, and I think that is one of the most beautiful songs.  No, the lyrics aren't exactly sweet, but there's still something beautiful about it.

Edit: Yup, it's the same song.  Might sound weird, but it's one of the songs I want played during V's birth.

Love The Civil Wars--definitely looking this one up!

  • My poor child. If she comes out loving the songs that have been "sung to her" (really I've only sang in the car along with songs I've heard on 90's on 9 and she can't tell whether I'm singing TO her or just singing) then she will be "soothed" by these songs: 2pac: Changes, Puff Daddy: I'll Be Missing You, Sheryl Crow: All I Wanna Do, and Eve 6: Inside Out, among other songs, but those 4 always get sung at the top of my lungs!

Yes it is the same song. Originally composed by The Beatles.

Leonard Cohen, no? I only ask because, if there's a Beatles version I haven't heard I need to get it immediately.

Hallelujah is a song I used to sing to the baby all the time when we were waiting for the amnio results. I prefer the original version by Leonard Cohen, but Jeff Buckley did a gorgeous cover (dare I say better than the original).

I sing 'Loving Cup' (Phish's version) to the baby all the time. Also, I sing 'Uncle John's Band' by the Grateful Dead. A few others, but these 2 get a strong response from the baby.

Unless my husband has the wrong artist on it - I have 3 versions. Rufus, Imogen Heap and The Beatles.  Now I want to google to get to the bottom of it.

I knew the song was a popular cover, but I had no idea so many people have done it! It's an amazing song, though, so I don't blame anyone.

I'm in the same boat.  I sing with the radio - mostly rock.  Can you really soothe a kid with Led Zepplin, Kid Rock, Ozzy, Black Crowes, Dropkick Murphys, Metallica.

Jeff Buckley has the best version IMO!! I love this song!

LO has only heard music that is on my itunes and what we listen to in the car.  I hope he likes indie rock .. or when my DH is in control, r&b and rap ugh.

Jeff Buckley's is my favorite version!

  • We are playing a ton of songs, but my favorite and most often played one is the Talking Heads' "This Must Be The Place".

  • I'm singing "Songbird" by Fleetwood Mac.  But... everytime I get a baby in my arms the only song that comes to mind is "Night Fever" by the Bee Gees.  Kind of a slowed down version.... It's good to bounce to.

L.O.V.E. love this song, but I actually play the rendition by Adele. I love her and her voice and there is something about this song that makes me want to cry every time. At certain parts I think about Steven and then other parts I think about baby Holden Smile makes my heart happy

  • I play the piano so the baby gets lots of musical exposure.  The only thing I specifically sing to him though is Bouncing Round the Room by Phish and I change the words to bouncing round the "womb".  Smile

  • I'm pretty much always listening to music, unless I'm watching TV. Smudge hears a lot of punk rock, country, classic rock, random disney music... I don't really sing to him, I feel weird talking/singing to my belly.

  • I loved singing "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" to DS and will sing it again to this little guy. Love that song, and I cry every time I hear Faith Hill's version.

  • This baby loves the Beatles... Blackbird, Across the Universe, Strawberry Fields. In the car we listen to a lot of Air1. We are often listening to Sheryl Crow & John Mayer too.
