How do you breastfeed?

1 side or 2?

Amount of time per side?

Everyone seems to recommend something different.

  • I offer both sides. She will usually come unlatched every 10 minutes and thats when i know to burp her. Almost always she has a burp and will relatch. I do 20-30 minutes on each side.

I also alternate the boob i start out on because most of the time she will do less time on the second boob.

Really just do what woks best for you and your LO. :)

  • i only offer one breast per feeding and usually 10-15 mins per side. This is what works for us bc my dd will eat forever if i dnt try to time her she will spit it back up bc she over eats i think. but i know many moms give there lo unlimited time at the breast, do what works for you and ur lo :)

  • So far we have been doing both sides 15-20 minutes per side.  Pretty sure if I let him, he would spend all day there ;c)

Was just curious what is working for other people!

  • both sides at every feeding.  if i didn't i would be in pain and i get blocked ducts too if i don't feed on both sides. i let him eat untill he unlatched (usually 10-15min on the first sife, 5-10 on the second side) and burp between. the next feeding i will start with the breast he ended with the feeding before.
  • I do both breasts at each feeding. The first breast for about 7-10 minutes, and then however long she wants on the other side (its usually 7-10 min as well). There are times when she's fallen asleep on the first side so thats all I do, but both sides is our typical feeding.

  • I used to do both breasts per feeding, but as she got older, we've changed to one boob per feeding.  She's usually done in 5-10 minutes.

  • Sometimes one side, sometimes both, sometimes we go back and forth several times. The amount of time varies largely from 5 minutes to 15-30 minutes per side.

I just feed her when she wants to eat and let her eat as long as she wants to. She's gaining weight and thriving, that's all that matters to me, not other peoples recommendations.

Do what your baby wants to do and go with it!

  • I try to get him to eat both sides b/c when I did from only one side he was eating about every 1-1.5 hr.  I usu. leave him on 20 min, of which 15 might be considered nutritive sucking.  He is still falling asleep on the breast so I'm working on that.  It's better than it used to be, I was at 30 min per side the first few weeks.

  • I offer 1 side for about 20 minutes.  At the next feeding, I offer the opposite side.  I was told by a lactation consultant to offer one side as dinner and the other side as dessert, however, that doesn't work for me.

  • One side until he stops or falls asleep.

  • When DD was your baby's age, I nursed for 10-15 minutes on each side at each nursing session (or at least offered the second side, which she sometimes refused).  Now that my milk supply is established and DD nurses much more efficiently, I nurse for about 8-10 minutes on one side and alternate which side I nurse from.
