NPR: Babies Palate and Food Memories Shaped Before Birth

This was a fascinating story on NPR this morning: https://www.npr.org/2011/08/08/139033757/babys-palate-and-food-memories-shaped-before-birth?sc=fb&cc=fp

No wonder DD loves chips, I craved them my whole pregnancy.  Salad too, that might explain her love of some veggies.  Although I had a crazy strong aversion to green beans and she loves them....

  • I heard it too, but I was hoping it turns out to be BS since I was dreadfully sick when pregnant with DS. He does eat more than just Cheez-Its and smoothies, which is all I ate, so there's hope.

  • I'll have to check it out later, but my experience so far doesn't follow that logic.  DD loves foods I don't eat (bananas and blueberries, esp.) and won't eat foods I ate by the boat ton while I was PG (inlcuding ice cream - she cannot be my child).

  • This could explain M's love for Thai food and garlic!

  • I agree with this, as well as what you eat while BFing.  DS loves spicy stuff, and pretty much all food except beets and radishes.  He's enjoyed it all since beginning solids.  I wasn't sick during pg with him and ate A LOT of everything.  Glad my 60lbs of baby weight helped him not to be a picky eater! lol
  • lol, I read this article this morning and all I could think was "fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck!" because my pregnancy eating habits are not the best!!
  • i could mostly only stomach breakfast foods while pregnant with tomas, and now that's all he likes to eat. always has been a big breakfast kid. we try to get all his calories met during the first 4hrs of the day, or else they just won't go in!

i had no appetite issues with audrey. i was starving all the time and now she is too! she is our little hungry hungry hippo! i can't believe sometimes how much that girl can eat! and she's still a baby! at this age, tomas was eating a few purees (mostly spinach and avocado, oatmeal and banana). if there is solid (read = non pureed) food on the table, audrey rejects her purees.

my mom, while pregnant with my brother, craved ramen noodles. my brother does too and will eat them plain, uncooked if he can't get to a pot of water! gross. but he loves it that way.

  • Interesting. C is a pretty good eater and we eat a pretty wide variety of foods. He definitely has his moments (there are weeks where he HATES corn and weeks where he LOVES corn), but he likes all kinds of flavors. Oddly, one of his favorite proteins is salmon and that was one of the very few foods I  could not even look at when pregnant. We only just started eating it again.
  • this would explain my kids' love of fruit, esp watermelon and blueberries.  But DD is still a very picky eater, same as DH and his Mom. DS will eat anything.
