Infertility

What do you think about this?

Since most of us are on the road to IVF, if not already doing IVF, I thought you might be interested in this.  I could be misreading it, but I am assuming that IVF would becoming illegal in Mississippi under this new law since they would define a fertilized egg as a person. What are your thoughts?

  • i'm not sure if i'm reading it right either, the way i read it, if it says a fertilized egg is a person, then wouldn't ivf be ok, since ivf involves carrying the baby, not aborting it?

not sure if i fully understand the article, doesn't get to particularly into detail, i'd be curious to find out more

I guess I was looking at it from the possibility of fertilizing eggs only to have them be non-viable or in the instances where embryos are destroyed for whatever reason.

This is what I was thinking.  I know we had to destroy a couple embryos last cycle because they wouldn't be viable.   I know they said IVF would be available, but would the gov't have issue with people who tried many cycles and have them all failed.

  • You are reading it correct, it would make IVF illegal.  Because part of the IVF process involves NOT transfering back every embryo in most cases it then becomes illegal.  Also, part of the language is usually some about not doing anything that could potentially harm and "human being" (in this case the embryo) it would then become illegal to even freeze embryos.  And you are right, they wouldn't allow you to discard genetically unviable embryos, so that basically shuts down all IVF operations.  The doctors would be at risk of being charged with murder.

We had the same law try to get passed in ND.  My RE actually told me about it and we both were letter writing to our representatives to try and get it stopped.  Also, I was contacted by a local news station and they did a story on it and included our story, it was very cool.  My RE testified at the hearings for several days, it was very trying, and in the end I believe that she was able to influence them enough to get the bill tabled and essentially shut down.

If you go to Resolves website they have more information on these bills that are they are trying to pass as well as a form letter you can add your info to and sent to all your legislators....

Apparently the same bill is being presented in a ton of Republican states this year.  Makes me sick.

  • This article is gross! Why can't people just stay out of each others' business?

But, see, when I read it, is sounded like IVF would be OK.... "Contraceptions that prevent the egg from accepting sperm would be just as easily obtainable, as would in vitrofertilization (IVF)." But, I agree with others that, from the rest of the article, what would they propose to do about the additional embryos that for whatever reason are not transferred/destroyed? It does seem like, according to their idiot law, this would be "murder" (gag).

So it seems unclear to me from this article, and requires further reading. Although I find meg_koole's experience very interesting.... and congratulations for helping them stuff that proposal in ND! Well done!

On a different note... I wonder if regular voters understand the true impact that not being able to use embryonic stem cells in scientific research? A law like this would be a HUGE setback to scientists, just HUGE! I'm sure the people proposing this bill are the same people that assume all scientists are evil non-believers, just trying to destroy the world.

    TTC since September 2010
    March 2011: Diagnosed with PCOS
First cycle 3/11: 50mg Clomid = No response

Fourth cycle 6/11: Femara + FSH again = Follies, but no ovulation and another BFN :(
Fifth cycle 7/11: Femara + FSH again = Wait and see!
