C-section moms - red around incision?

I had my daughter on 7/28 via c-section.  About 1/4 of my incision is red, and possibly slightly raised.  I don't have any other symptoms of infection (fever, pain, discharge, puss, etc....).   Does anyone else have any areas on their incisions that are red like this?  I am definately calling the nurse line about it tomorrow, but just thought I would get other input if I could.

  • Is there an on-call you could call rather than wait until tomorrow?

  • I'm sure there is, I just have to look it up.  The LAST thing I want is an infection in this area...

  • Do you know if your OB gave you an antibiotic at delivery?  Usually this is done in your IV.  Some OB do, others do not.  Is it warm to the touch?  Did you have  a long labor before the c-s?  That is more likely to result in an infection?  In any case, I do not think this sounds urgent but I would call on Monday.  I had an infection with my first delivery without fever.

  • It could be the start of something... or it could be nothing, but I would still call because you do not want to mess around with an infection!  My friend's incision got infected and it was a rough experience :(  Mine was never red or raised.  Does your insurance have a nurse line?  You could call them and ask...

    TFAS since May 2013
8/14 - Bloodwork showed heterozygous MTHFR gene mutation and elevated AMH (but no cysts)
9/14 - HSG, Hysteroscopy and laparoscopy showed tubes clear, but found and removed Endometriosis, scar tissue and 2 small benign masses on my tubes.
11/14 - Daily ultrasounds confirmed that my follicles are not releasing the egg and every other day blood draws showed very low progesterone... DH's SA was near perfect
12/14 - moving onto meds!!! Hold up!!!  Surprise BFP after only taking the progesterone!  Now what do I do with all of the other meds we already paid for?!  Due at the end of August 2015 Beta#1- 4434 @ 22DPO  Beta#2 - 7335 @ 25DPO Beta #3 - 14429  @ 28DPO
  • I wouldn't hesitate to call about that.  Infection can lead to the incision splitting open and then you have to heal it all over again.  Not something to mess with.  I hope it is nothing!

  • mine's not red but the on one of the ends is more raised than the rest. I have been putting an ice pack twice a day for the swelling. They gave me antibiotics thru the IV but none at discharge just pain meds. If you're worried I would call to make sure

  • Thanks ladies, I'm going to call tomorrow.  I live 1 block away from my clinic if I need to be seen, so I can always just try to get an appointment too.  I did have a long labor, and 2 hours of pushing, so if that puts me at an increased risk, I definately want it checked out.  I don't remember getting red spots on my incision with my first DD, but can't remember what it looked like either while it was healing.   Crossing my fingers for a good outcome!

  • Mine was like this. It was also very bruised in parts and started draining. I never had an infection or anything, it was just some pooled blood behind the incision that needed released. My doctor did put me on antibiotics just in case, but the raised red parts they didn't seem concerned about in the doctor's office - just the bruising and bleeding/draining. Is it hot to the touch? If so, you may just want to call and see what they say.
