  • Congrats on #3! The DC area is great. This board always recommends renting for a year before you make the decision to buy as there are so many different variables. If your DH is working in Bethesda, you will probably want to focus your search in Montgomery County, MD, but you could live in parts of Fairfax County, VA, as the commute would be mostly against traffic. It really depends on your budget as the neighborhoods that usually get recommended can vary. I live in Silver Spring, MD, which is pretty close to Bethesda. A lot of nesties/bumpies live in Silver Spring, and like it! It's a great place to have kids - there are 3 or 4 babies under 1 in my neighborhood, and quite a few toddlers, too, for example. I live near a big regional park with a carousel and miniature train, and there is a lot to do in downtown Silver Spring. DC is a metro ride away. The schools in Montgomery County are excellent as is the park system. I am biased toward Maryland, though, as I grew up here. But there are lots of nice places in Fairfax County, too. They also have an excellent school system and a great park system. I don't know too much about churches in either area, but other bumpies can probably fill in.

  • Good luck with the decision! I agree with the PP that you should look in MD if he'll be working in Bethesda.  Will you be working?  Do you know where?  That might change where you want to look.

I will say, if you're not familiar with this area, that unless this new job is offering a lot more than in GA (or he makes a lot in GA), I'd be cautious about the move.  As much as I like this area, it's expensive.  Not NYC expensive (which it sounds like you have experience with), but expensive.  I'm not as familiar with MD, but I'm guessing a SFH in Bethesda would start in the 700K range.  There are other area that are less for sure, however.
