Food Allergy

How did your LOs get tested?

My fiance is severely allergic to a massive list of foods. Our son has been showing signs of food allergies since day 1. I suspect a few things as being culprits (I.E. peas and soy) but, since he is only ten months old, his pedi will NOT test him. He says he is too young. Given his fathers allergies, I would think they would test him. So I have been playing games, trying to figure this out, scared out of my mind, my fiance has had 13 anaphylatic reactions in 19 years, he is scared because he does not want our son to go through the same things. Is it possible to get a baby allergy tested?

Re: How did your LOs get tested?

  • DD had a scratch test at 6 months and RAST at 1 year.  My ped wants me to go to the allergist for DS (8weeks) sooner than later just for a consult, but he has serious food intolerances.

  • My DD had the patch test done at about 8 or 9 months for a suspected milk allergy. Do you need a referral from your pedi to see an allergist? If not, I would seek out an allergist who will see peds in your area. Why make your LO suffer any longer than necessary?

  • first, find a new allergist. If you suspect an allergy and your son's father has severe allergies, that should be a good enough reason to test him.

My allergist said that if there is family history (my son), and now that i am pregnant again, even without any signs she would like to test him after he turns 6 months (if we wish).

My son was tested at 7 months (skin and RAST), and i wish i did it sooner b/c he was tested do to an ana reaction that sent him to the ER.. if he was tested earlier we could have avoided it.

  • Definitely see a pediatric allergist.  DS#3 was tested at seven months.  It's not too early to find out what's going on and you want to have the appropriate medications on hand (epi-pen) in case he needs one.

  • I need to find someone else, because his old pedi just kind of brushed it off. His father has severe allergies, that alone made me want him tested. Peas and soy bother my son, vomiting, diarrhea etc. I dont give them to him anymore. Peanut butter is not in my house and never will be because of my fiancee, but I just want to know if our son is allergic too. Peas and soy and very close to peanuts. It started out with vomiting and diarrhea for my fiance.
