Food Allergy

Getting nervous

Gracie is starting "school" tomorrow, and I am getting more and more nervous. I met with her teacher to explain about her milk allergy, and I will be sending her milk to school. However, the kids are provided a snack every day. I told the teacher whenever possible, I would like G to be able to eat the snack that the rest of the kids are eating (b/c she notices if she isn't eating what everyone else is having), but I am so nervous that they are going to give her foods she isn't supposed to have. Would it be totally neurotic and unreasonable of me to ask them to e-mail me the brands/snacks they will be serving that week so I can look up the ingredients to determine if they are safe?

Re: Getting nervous

  • Honestly, I don't let other people feed my children.  I have one going in to 1st grade and one going in to pre-k this year.  Last year was really difficult navigating the whole food allergy thing in kindergarten.  I think it's much easier on my daughter to know she can only eat food we send.  How else would she know that it's safe for her?  A lot of food at school doesn't have labels and honestly, most adults aren't good at reading labels / identifying allergens.  When food was given our in our dd's class, we provided a safe similar food for her.  It was extra work for us, but well worth it to keep her safe and healthy.  Its easy for kids this age to get confused and not know what they are and are not supposed to eat.

  • I don't blame you. I think I would do the same.
  • I would not let them give her snacks. no way.  I would provide them with a basket full of yummy snacks that are specifically for your daughter and she can only have things from that basket.

Good luck!!!!!! school is my worst fear..

  • I'm with the others- I'd send safe snacks for her.  J only gets the snacks that the other kids are having at daycare if it's a fruit/veggie/the one cereal I okayed as "safe".  On the other days- I've sent snacks that are similar to what the other kiddos are having.  My sitter has safe pretzles, animal crackers, chips, popcorn, yogurt etc. on hand so that his snacks closely match what the other kids are having.
